Trauma Informed Care

Trauma-Informed Care provides an exploration of trauma and its impact on individuals. It provides foundational knowledge and awareness of trauma, principles of a trauma-informed approach, and emphasizes factors that promote resilience and well-being.

Topics include:

  • Forms of trauma
  • Trauma-informed principles and practice
  • Understanding the brain's response to trauma
  • Regulation
  • Interventions and support

Overall, the aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of trauma, its effects, and practical strategies for promoting resilience and well-being.

    • The presentation also includes assessments to reinforce learning and ensure understanding of the material covered.

Learning Objectives: 

Module 1 will provide basic, foundational knowledge and awareness of trauma. We will discuss the principles and purpose of trauma-informed care and we will explore how the brain processes trauma and strategies to regulate the nervous system. By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Identify examples of various forms of trauma  
  • Articulate the purpose of trauma-informed care practices  
  • Identify the principles of trauma-informed care practice  
  • Recognize how the brain responds to trauma 

Module 2 will expand on the foundational knowledge and awareness of trauma. Exploration of factors known to promote resilience and well-being will be examined and emphasized throughout the session. ​By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Identify at least 5 different interventions and support ​
  • List at least 3 practical strategies for effective self-care practices

Instructor Bios

Jennifer has over 20 years of social work practice and teaching experience and has worked in a variety of settings including higher education, medical, military, state government, private, and non-profit organizations. Her experiences have been the driving force to further research and learn more about trauma and its impacts on individuals, families, groups, and communities. Uncovering how the brain responds to trauma is essential for identifying effective interventions and supports so we may make a difference in the lives of those impacted by trauma.

Dr. Schlinger graduated from the University of North Dakota with her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work and later earned her Doctor of Education, focusing her dissertation on trauma education in social work curricula. Jennifer is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Director of Field Education for Department of Social Work at the University of North Dakota. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate students and recently developed a course dedicated to Trauma-Informed Care. She also teaches Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Social Work Task and Treatment Groups, Social Work Policy, Social Work Research Methods, and Field Education Seminar.

Jennifer looks forward to sharing her knowledge and expertise to provide participants with a deeper understanding of trauma with the goal of empowering clients on their path to healing and resilience.

Anne has a special interest in Trauma-Informed Care as she has noticed the impact of trauma on her client's progress toward health goals. The more attuned she became to her patient's needs the better their health outcomes. She wants to share these insights with others in the hopes of improving patient/provider relationships and patient outcomes.

Anne Bodensteiner is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of North Dakota. With a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning with an emphasis in Higher Education, and a Master of Science in Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Science, Anne brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her role. She is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, with active licenses and certifications in multiple states. Anne has been instrumental in developing and directing various programs, including the Certificate in Health & Wellness Coaching and the Master of Science in Nutrition.

Anne's professional journey includes roles as a dietitian health coach, health promotion coordinator, and extension agent, where she has demonstrated a commitment to improving health and wellness through education and community engagement. She has received numerous awards for her contributions to the field, including the Outstanding Novice Clinical Researcher and the UND Award for Excellence in Online Course Development and Innovative Teaching Strategies. Anne's dedication to her students and her innovative approach to teaching make her an invaluable asset to the CEU course. Participants can look forward to gaining insights from her extensive experience and expertise in nutrition and dietetics.
