Why minor in Applied Humanities?

Humanities disciplines pose “the big questions” about the human condition, truth, knowledge, morality and the meaning of life. The Applied Humanities Minor provides you with methods for framing, contextualizing, analyzing and interrogating those questions so that you are better prepared to formulate coherent, practical and morally responsible answers. In the program you will have the opportunity to critically reflect upon your current and future role within society as moral agents, citizens, professionals and leaders, and be well-prepared to excel in whatever career you choose.

Concentrations

Select a concentration that aligns with your career goals:

  • Caring for Others: The Medical Humanities cluster designed for students pursuing careers in fields involving the care and well-being of others, including such majors as biology, nursing, medicine, physical or occupational therapy, psychology, counseling, physical therapy and social work.
  • Educating for Democracy: The Democratic Pedagogy cluster designed for students pursuing careers in fields involving education or policy, including such majors as education, criminal justice, political science, pre-law, leadership and public affairs.
  • Humanizing Technology: The Technology Ethics cluster designed for students pursuing degrees and careers in fields involving advanced technology, such as engineering, cybersecurity, information systems and geospatial technology.
  • Pursuing Justice & Equality: The Social Justice Studies cluster designed for students pursuing careers in fields involving law and leadership, including such majors as criminal justice, pre-law, forensic science, leadership, management, political science and public affairs.
  • Sustaining the Environment: The Environmental Humanities cluster designed for students pursuing degrees and careers in fields involving the natural environment and sustainability, such as atmospheric sciences, biology, engineering, earth system science and policy, environmental studies, geography and geology.

What majors pair well with an Applied Humanities minor?

Combining an Applied Humanities minor with certain majors can complement your skill set and open up diverse career pathways. Here are some bachelor's degrees that pair well with an Applied Humanities minor:

  • Pre-Health Programs: Participation in any of these programs will allow you access to materials, personnel and opportunities unequaled in the state of North Dakota. UND's Pre-Health Programs are designed to prepare you for successful application to health professional schools.
  • Environmental Studies Degree: Environmental Studies draws on many diverse disciplines from the sciences to study the complex connections of environmental systems. Communications, political science, arts and humanities help in the understanding of human impacts and use of these systems. At UND, you will study these many areas to gain the skills and knowledge to be successful in a career in solving environmental problems.
  • Pre-Law: At UND you have multiple options to choose from that are designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to sit for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and succeed in law school.
  • Education Degree: END's Education undergraduate and graduate programs prepare you to positively impact your communities and shape the future
  • Nursing Degree: The UND College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines (CNPD) offers undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare you in nursing, social work, and nutrition and dietetics.
  • Engineering Degree: The College of Engineering & Mines has several programs that are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission or the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.
  • Criminal Justice Degree: A degree in Criminal Justice Studies prepares you to serve as an agent of change in our justice system. From law enforcement to community safety to juvenile justice issues, you’ll be ready to tackle some of our nation’s most pressing challenges.
  • Computer Science Degree: Learn problem solving and computer programming at the University of North Dakota. Our program will teach you how to model and analyze problems, design solutions, and verify results using with today’s most exciting technology.

Applied Humanities Minor Courses 

HIST 328. Human Rights. 3 Credits.

This course will explore how the concept of human rights developed throughout the world from the 18th century to today. Topics will include debates over what human rights are and when they originated, how people throughout the world have used the concept for their own ends, and why it is a controversial subject today. S, even years.

PHIL 245. Death and Dying. 3 Credits.

An examination of various perspectives on death and dying in our own and other cultures with a view to coping with the problems of mortality and immortality. Medical, psychological, philosophical, and religious aspects contributing to an understanding of the meaning of death will be offered by resource people whose experience will lend assistance to the student's confronting the reality of death and dying. Lecture and discussion. F,S.

ENGL 232. Technology in Literature. 3 Credits.

A course that introduces students to issues surrounding human interactions with technology through discussion of literary texts and film. F.

IS 365. Public and Environmental Health. 3 Credits.

This course addresses the ways in which Indigenous communities have perceived and dealt with public and environmental health issues from the period before contact with Europeans to the present day. S, even years.

LANG 380. Global Gateways. 3 Credits.

A window to the interdisciplinary nature of cultural practices and traditions around the world, this course will explore an understanding of culture as historical, literary, linguistic, visual, and performative. Through reading, writing, and discussion to foster advanced communication, students will be expected to engage and examine intercultural contexts and complexities. Repeatable when topics vary. Repeatable to 6.00 credits. F,S,SS.
