Biomedical engineering is the application of mathematics and physics to solve healthcare problems. You'll be an engineer who is familiar with medical and clinical terminology making you suitable to work with clinicians.

Our biomedical engineering master's students are part of a biomedical research and device development team at the UND College of Engineering & Mines. You'll help launch the next generation of medical breakthroughs that can improve the healthcare outcomes of lives all around the world.

Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field. For the most part, it includes different disciplines of engineering and science. Biomedical engineering master's research options include:

  • Biomechanics
  • Biomaterials
  • Bio-instrumentation
  • Multi-scale
  • Bio-simulation and modeling
  • Bio-signals
  • Other emerging areas in biomedical engineering

No one can be an expert in all fields. You should choose to gain experience in one of these fields based on your background and future plans.

On-Campus or Online Biomedical Engineering Master's

  • UND is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a best online graduate engineering program.

  • Individualize your master's program and choose from several Biomedical Research Groups, including the Center for Biomedical Research.

  • Conduct groundbreaking research. SafetySpect Inc. is testing its handheld ultraviolet light disinfection system at UND biomedical engineering labs. The U.S. Air Force and the global food-services industry are interested in this new technology.

  • Leverage the expertise and resources of three departments: UND College of Engineering & Mines, UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences and NDSU's College of Engineering.

  • The biomedical engineering master's has both thesis and non-thesis options. Learn online or on-campus.

  • Open yourself up to greater career opportunities by focusing on areas where biomedical engineering expertise is most needed.

Flexible Online Biomedical Engineering Master's Courses

All engineering online courses follow the UND semester-based schedule noted in the academic calendar. Some online courses may have optional opportunities for live Zoom class lectures instead of watching pre-recorded lecture videos which all online courses have available.

With asynchronous classes, you do not attend class at a set time. If you need to balance work, family and other commitments, this flexible format allows you to learn anywhere at any time.

Depending on your instructor, you’ll learn online through:

  • Lesson modules
  • Streaming video content
  • Virtual libraries
  • Posted lectures
  • Online simulations

There will be times when you interact with your instructor and classmates through online discussion boards, polls and chat rooms.

Your learning revolves around materials that can be accessed on your own time within a set time frame. However, this is not a self-paced course. You’ll have structure and deadlines.

Top-Tier Online Master's in Biomedical Engineering

Over a third of UND's student population is exclusively online; plus, more take a combination of online and on-campus classes. You can feel reassured knowing you won't be alone in your online learning journey, and you'll have resources and services tailored to your needs.

No matter how you customize your online experience, you’ll get the same top-quality education as any other on campus student.
