Petroleum Geology at UND

  • North Dakota, the second largest oil producing state in the country (ND DMR), is home of the Harold Hamm School of Geology and Geological Engineering located on the campus of its flagship university, UND.

  • The College of Engineering & Mines houses the Wilson Laird Core Library that serves as the archive for 80 miles of cores obtained by oil and gas companies in the Williston Basin of North Dakota.

Petroleum Geology Certificate Courses You Could Take

GEOL 407. Petroleum Geology. 3 Credits.

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the application of geological principles in the exploration and production of oil and gas. Prerequisite: GEOL 101 or GEOE 203 or GEOE 210. S.

GEOE 301. Petrophysics. 3 Credits.

Mineral and rock formation, identification and petrophysical properties, particularly with respect to porous rocks and their interactions with fluids. Prerequisite: GEOE 203. Corequisite: GEOE 301L. S, odd years.

GEOL 500. Sedimentary Geology. 1-4 Credits.

Selected topics in sedimentary geology, such as sedimentary processes, carbonate petrology, clastic petrology, and basin analysis. May be repeated up to 12 credits. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Repeatable to 12.00 credits. F.
