UND's Public Health Education program is based on a strong foundation in the health sciences, social sciences and psychology. You'll think critically and scientifically, while enhancing communication skills and leadership experiences.

You will obtain formal training in public health without pursuing an undergraduate degree. The certificate in public health provides you with the opportunity to enhace your education experience without the need for a four-year degree. Or, if you choose, you can add this certificate as part of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health Education program.

Those with public health skills are in high demand due to an aging population, increasing chronic diseases, and the need to improve the health of communities. You can pursue a career in a variety of settings, including government agencies, non-profit organizations and private businesses.

An undergraduate public health certificate can open a variety of career options in the public health field. Some of the most common jobs for public health certificate holders include:

  • Health educators promote healthy lifestyles and prevent disease. They may develop and deliver educational programs, conduct research, or work in community outreach.
  • Health promotion specialists improve the health of populations by developing and implementing programs that address social, environmental, and behavioral factors that influence health.
  • Community health workers provide health education, support and resources to help individuals navigate healthcare systems.
  • Environmental health specialists protect the health of people and the environment by preventing and controlling exposure to harmful substances. They may conduct inspections, develop regulations, or provide education and training.
  • Vital records technicians collect, maintain, and disseminate vital records, such as birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage licenses.

Public Health Certificate Courses 

PHE 101. Introduction to Public Health. 3 Credits.

Introduction to the population health approach to public health. Principles of evidence-based public health and tools for implementation including health communications and informatics, applications of social and behavioral sciences, and health policy, law and ethics. Methods for addressing non-communicable diseases, communicable disease and environmental diseases and injury. An overview of the U.S. health care system and comparisons with health care systems in other developed countries. Examination of public health institutions and systems at the local/state, federal and global levels as well as future issue in public health. F,S.

PHE 103. Introduction to Global Health. 3 Credits.

The purpose of this course is to provide the students with the basic knowledge of health indicators, major determinants, and trends of global health. F.

PHE 303. Organization and Administration of Community Health Programs. 3 Credits.

The purpose of this course is to provide the students with the basic principles of the organization and administration of health programs; leadership skills; grant writing. Prerequisite: PHE 101. S.

PHE 308. Health Policy, Law, and Ethics. 3 Credits.

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the legal and ethical issues impacting the administration and delivery of health care services. Health policy will examine the governmental role in health and in the provision of health care. Health policies, law, and ethics have a profound effect on quality of life. Accessibility, cost, quality of health care; safety of food, water, and environment; the right to make decisions about our health; these issues are vitally tied to health policies, law, and ethics. Prerequisite: PHE 101 and PHE 102. S.
