The History of UND Student Evaluations

History of Student Evaluations at UND

The University Student Assessment of Teaching (USAT) form had been in existence for more than a decade, with only small changes incorporated throughout the years. In 2014, a sub-committee (Ad Hoc USAT Committee) was appointed by the Senate Executive Committee to review the content and administration of the student evaluation of teaching forms and their application. Their final report, submitted in December 2014, summarizes the issues and problems the group studied, provides a summary of the key research findings and sources, as well as a list of recommendations.

Based on the recommendations from the 2014 USAT Committee, the University Senate formed a follow-up committee - called the SETIC. SETIC work was ongoing from Spring 2015 through Spring 2016 and continued into Fall 2016. Throughout that period SETIC developed a new instrument, piloted the new questions, and analyzed the data. The new instrument, called the Student Evaluation of Learning & Feedback for Instructors (or the SELFI) was presented to the campus in April 2016 as well as shared with University Senate in May 2016. An announcement regarding the SELFI was also shared through the U Letter. SETIC's final report was submitted the end of September 2016.
