Histotechnician Certificate Requirements

Follow these requirements for a histotechnician certificate.

Participation in the Histotechnician (HT) Professional Program requires that students be matriculated to both UND and the HT Program.  Application and acceptance to UND is different than application and acceptance to the HT Program.  A separate application is required for each, and admission into one does not guarantee admission to the other.  Similarly, students must remain in good standing with both UND and the HT Program to advance.  Applicable policies can be found in the UND Academic Catalog, UND and HT websites, and the HT Handbook.

HT Program Admission Requirements

  1. Completion of an associate degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited institution
  2. Cumulative GPA of >2.8 on a scale of 4.0
  3. Successful and timely completion of the following pre-requisite coursework with a letter grade of C or better, prior to the start of HT Program coursework:
    • Introduction to Chemistry (at least 4 credits)
    • Concepts of Biology (at least 4 credits)
    • College Level Math
  4. Confirmation of placement at an approved clinical site for practicum coursework; The clinical site must be approved by the UND HT program as meeting curricular requirements, and an affiliation agreement must be in place between UND HT and the site
  5. Acknowledgement of program-specific Essential Functions and School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) Technical Standards
  6. Completion of a criminal background check in accordance with SMHS and/or Clinical Site policy
  7. Be accepted/matriculated to UND as an undergraduate student

What is an undergraduate certificate?

The difference between certificate and degree programs typically involves the time and cost to earn them. They also differ in the number of courses you must take. Degrees provide you with a well-rounded depth of knowledge while certificate programs focus on skills related to a specific career field. Like a minor, a certificate program is noted on your UND official transcript. The difference between an undergraduate certificate program and a minor is that students may pursue certificate programs without pursuing a major.

The same undergraduate degree admission requirements apply to undergraduate certificate programs at UND. Many students choose to pursue undergraduate certificate programs while concurrently working on a degree. Others are enrolled exclusively in undergraduate certificate programs.
