Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Education are listed below.

The applicant must meet the School of Graduate Studies’ current minimum general admission requirements as published in the graduate catalog.

  1. Graduate grade point average(s) above 3.5.
  2. Excellent writing skills.
  3. Three references that speak to academic ability, professional accomplishments related to your field of study, and positive character traits.
  4. A statement of clear professional goals that can be met by our program as specified in the graduate catalog.
  5. Satisfy the School of Graduate Studies’ English Language Proficiency requirements as published in the graduate catalog.

Degree Requirements

90 credit hours, a written comprehensive exam, a dissertation, dissertation prospectus, and preliminary and final dissertation defenses.

Completion of diagnostic exams in music history and music theory is required of all new graduate music students.

When approved by the student's advisor and the Graduate School, this program allows up to 30 credit hours of previously completed graduate coursework to be used for this degree.

A minimum of two semesters must be spent in continuous full-time residence at UND.
