Understanding the science behind reading skill development and optimal learning conditions is an expectation for educators nationwide. Many if not most school districts now require their educators to possess professional knowledge and expertise in the science of reading to ensure effective teaching and learning experiences. The science of reading initiative began with a focus on foundational skills for beginning readers but has since evolved to include various levels of educators.

In UND's undergraduate Science of Reading online certificate, you'll engage with relevant scientific research implications for best practice and have opportunities to design and deliver impactful instruction and interventions grounded in the science of reading. The Science of Reading certificate is a valuable and timely certificate given the need for teaching excellence to meet workforce needs.

You could earn the Science of Reading certificate embedded within the Literacy Education minor which would allow extensive background knowledge in reading. The undergraduate Science of Reading certificate can also be earned as a stand-alone certificate.

What can you do with a Science of Reading certification?

UND's Science of Reading certificate is not a licensure program. In order to be a licensed teacher, you must obtain a bachelor's degree in education. However, administration seeks to hire licensed teacher candidates that come with research-based knowledge and know-how to better assist their students in navigating reading development and skills. UND's online Science of Reading undergraduate certificate prepares you for more specialized reading positions such as:

  • Reading Specialist/Reading Interventionist: Specialize in assessing and addressing the individualized needs of students to enhance reading skills and comprehension. A Reading Interventionist is dedicated to helping students who struggle with reading by implementing targeted interventions and personalized strategies. You will work closely with teachers, parents, and other specialists to foster literacy development and academic success.

Many states including the State of North Dakota require all educators in elementary schools (K-3) to have training in the science of reading. UND's Science of Reading undergraduate certificate along with the Literacy Education minor prepares preservice teachers to possess expertise and be career ready in the field of reading education.
