Literacy Education Minor Requirements

Earn a minor in Literacy Education by meeting these requirements.

Minor in Literacy Education

The Literacy Education minor is open to students majoring in a field which leads to teacher certification at the early childhood, elementary, middle or secondary level. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education program. Students from related disciplines such as Communication Science and Disorders may also be admitted. The program consists of 20 credits, which includes required and elective courses.

Students who complete the Literacy Education minor are eligible to apply for the North Dakota Reading Credential, which enables teachers to work as reading specialists at one of the following levels in North Dakota: K-6 (Elem or Elem/ECE double majors), 5-8 (Elem and Secondary with MLE minor or MLE major), 7-12 (Generalist Credential for English, Social Studies or Science majors). NOTE: in North Dakota there is no Early Childhood Reading Credential. The coursework meets the requirements for the North Dakota Reading Credential.

Note: All courses completed for the minor must be taken in addition to those taken for the major. It is recommended that all students pursuing this minor complete T&L 335 Foundations of Reading early in the course sequence as it is a prerequisite for more advanced reading courses.

What is a minor in college?

A minor is like a mini-major. Your major is your primary area of study and a minor allows you to pursue another discipline, add training that supports your major, or explore personal interests. A minor is noted on your official UND transcript and adds another layer of professional knowledge to your degree.

You do not have to have a minor in college, although certain majors may require a minor. Your minor must be combined with a major/degree program. Like majors, minors must be declared and have special requirements like mandatory classes.

Consult with your academic advisor if you are interested in adding a minor to your major. They will ensure you can fit a minor into your schedule without interfering with your major requirements.
