Studying mathematics helps you understand the building blocks of science and our everyday world. From computational mathematics to analytical thinking, a mathematics degree builds the skills you need in any career.

As a Mathematics major at UND, you'll take a deep dive into subjects including:

  • Applied Math
  • Combinatorics and Cryptology
  • Probability and Statistics
  • Mathematical Analysis
  • Number Theory and Abstract Algebra

As you progress through the curriculum, you'll become proficient at:

  • Computational mathematics
  • Logical and analytical thinking
  • Formulating problems in mathematical language and solving them
  • Working with mathematical structures
  • Abstract thinking
  • Mathematical concepts and teaching methods

As part of the Mathematics 4+1 program you will start a research project as an undergraduate in the Mathematics Capstone course, (Math 488), completing it as a thesis or independent study as a graduate student. There will be multiple opportunities for you to present your work at conferences and as published research papers. 

How the Accelerated Math Degree Works

The accelerated program allows you to complete both the bachelor’s in math and master’s in math at an accelerated pace.

All requirements for both the bachelor's and mater's degrees must be met. You may double count up to 12 graduate-level credits towards the requirements for your undergraduate and graduate degree. You must obtain your master's degree within 12 months of completing your undergraduate degree, provided the degree requirements can be completed in that time frame.

Complete the required courses, and you'll earn both your bachelor's and master's degrees at the same time. You’ll declare your program of study as an undergraduate student and follow a straightforward plan to graduate with a master’s degree.

  1. Incoming freshman or transfer students apply to UND as an undergraduate student.
  2. After completing 60 credits, apply to the School of Graduate Studies.

Accelerated B.S. and M.S. Math Degree

  • Volunteer to work with teen math students in our annual Math Track Meet.

  • Hear from experts in the field through our visiting speaker series.

  • Study with faculty who are experts in their areas of interest and receive one-on-one attention.

  • Immerse yourself in a topic of interest and complete a large-scale independent study project.

  • Get the tutoring help you need at the Math Learning Center & Computer Lab.

  • Opt for an off-campus experience in UND’s math co-op and internship programs.

Accelerated Math Degree Courses

MATH 512. Modern Analysis I. 3 Credits.

Algebras and sigma - algebras, Borel sets, measures, measurable sets and Lebesgue measure, non-measurable sets, measurable functions, the definition and basic properties of the Lebesgue integral, Fatou's lemma, the monotone convergence theorem, and Lebesgue's dominated convergence theorem. Prerequisite: MATH 432. On demand.

MATH 513. Modern Analysis II. 3 Credits.

Product measures, Fubini's theorem, the Radon Nikodym theorem, inequalities of Hölder and Minkowski, definitions and basic properties of normed spaces and Banach spaces, some classical Banach spaces such as Lp and lp, bounded linear operators, and dual spaces. Prerequisite: MATH 512.

MATH 520. Topology I. 3 Credits.

Point set topology, including metric spaces and such topics as homeomorphisms, separation axioms, compactness, connectedness, general convergence, compactification and metrizability. Prerequisite: MATH 431.

MATH 515. Applied Mathematics. 3 Credits.

The content of the course varies but includes current topics in applied mathematics such as: (1) ordinary or partial differential equations, (2) approximation theory and perturbation techniques, (3) modeling and computer simulation, (4) special functions, (5) numerical analysis, (6) variational methods, (7) transforms, (8) integral equations. Prerequisite: MATH 266 or consent of instructor.

MATH 521. Topology II. 3 Credits.

Point set topology, including metric spaces and such topics as homeomorphisms, separation axioms, compactness, connectedness, general convergence, compactification and metrizability. Prerequisite: MATH 520. On demand.
