The music education major allows you to customize your plan of study according to your specific interests. Your course of study includes:

  • In-depth study in your instrument or voice of emphasis

  • Ensemble participation
  • A full semester of student teaching

Music Education Degree at UND

  • Immerse yourself in the classroom with a full semester of student teaching and three semesters of field experience.

  • Perform with our choirs, bands, chamber orchestra or chamber ensembles.

  • Join the National Association for Music Education or the American Choral Directors Association.

UND Career Services

Music education majors typically find jobs as music teachers in elementary, middle and high schools. Some teach general music, while others lead instrumental or choral programs. As a band or choir director at the high school level, you might lead your students around the world in national and international performances and competitions. Some school districts have a District Supervisor of Music who works with teachers to coordinate music education curriculum and activities.

UND graduates enjoy a very high employment rate as public school music teachers. In recent years, 100% of our music education graduates have found jobs in their field.

Music Education Degree Courses

MUSC 154. Individual Lessons. 1 Credit.

Applied study of the stated instrument or voice at the freshman level. Half hour lesson. For the final examination, the student will perform before the faculty. No regular student may take an Applied Music course without credit or on other than a letter grade basis. Repeatable. Prerequisite: Music Majors only or by permission of the instructor. Repeatable. F,S.

MUSC 277. Chamber Music Groups. 1 Credit.

Any combination of strings, brass, woodwind, voices, percussion, or keyboard instruments on an ad hoc basis by a faculty member to utilize the particular talents of advanced students in exploring and performing chamber music literature. These groups will prepare compositions in such media as string quartets and trios, woodwind quintets, and vocal quartets. Repeatable to 20.00 credits. F,S.

MUSC 256. Basic Conducting. 2 Credits.

Development of basic conducting techniques, baton technique, and use of the left hand. Reading of choral and instrumental scores. F.

MUSC 130. Music Theory I. 3 Credits.

The study of diatonic harmonic and melodic principles of Western European music from 1600 to 1900. Topics include harmonic progressions, melodic patterns, rhythmic patterns, and voice leading. Material is learned through part writing, keyboard skills, and music analysis. Corequisite: MUSC 131. F.

MUSC 440. Methods and Materials for Elementary Music. 3 Credits.

Overview of methods and materials in elementary music for music majors and minors. Includes experiences for the practical application of course content. Corequisite: T&L 386. F.

MUSC 203. Music and Culture. 3 Credits.

Exploration of how human culture is expressed through music. F,S.

Leader in Music

Starting with the basics of piano, Kétina François joined the orchestra to play double bass in the fourth grade, and her musical repertoire grew from there. Throughout her time at UND, Kétina’s dedication to her craft has earned her numerous accolades.
