Student Employment

The University of North Dakota Student Employment program provides part time job opportunities to student to help finance their educational needs along with providing work experience which allows students to explore career options, discover strengths, and see how academic learning applies to world of work.

Federal Work Study Employment

Federal Work Study Employment: Federal Work Study (FWS) is awarded through the UND Office of Student Finance. A work study award indicates that you are eligible to seek FWS employment; however, it is not a guarantee of a job.

FWS Positions

Institutional Employment (Non-Work Study)

Institutional Employment: Any UND student can be employed as an Institutional (INST) student employee. Institutional employment is offered to students enrolled in at least one credit. It is not based on financial need.

Off-Campus Student Jobs and Internships

It is preferred that you work on campus while attending UND. Students who work on campus are shown to perform better in their classes, are more engaged in UND student life, and benefit from flexible work schedules. If you prefer to work off campus, check out the opportunities listed on Handshake.

International Student Employment

As an international student, you are not eligible for Federal Work Study (FWS), however, you can still work on-campus. For more information, please visit the International Student and Scholar Services website.

Recruitment Updates

Standardized Start Dates to Continue for Student Employment

To continue the enhancement of our hiring process, standardized start dates for student hires have now been permanently implemented as part of the standard hiring process. This initiative provides our student employees with an optimal onboarding experience as they begin their journey as valuable members of the UND community. Please read the following information carefully as it will affect your student hiring process.

Start Date: Monday Status of Offer Accepted Paperwork Complete by previous Wednesday.

  • Example: Start Date: Monday October 6, 2025. Status of Offer Accepted Paperwork Complete by Wednesday October 1,2025

Student Employee Timeline

Academic Year versus Fiscal Year

  • The Academic Year is the Fall and Spring Semesters combined.
    • Running the first day of fall term until the last day of spring term
  • The Fiscal Year encompasses the academic year
    • Runs July 1-June 30

July 1

Start of the Fiscal Year 

August 1

First day an Institutional Student Employee can work for the current academic year

Summer Graduation/Last Day of Summer Term

  • Last day a student not enrolled for the fall term can be employed in a student position
  • Last day a student with a summer term graduation can work in a student position

August 16

First day a Federal Work Study funded student can work for the fall term

December 1-15

Federal Work Study allocation requests open for the Spring Semester

Fall Graduation/Last Day of Fall Term

  • Last day a student not enrolled for the spring term can be employed in a student position
  • Last day a student with a fall term graduation can work in a student position
  • Student Employees can begin working up to 40 hours per week during the winter break

December 31

Departments with an FWS allocation who are not utilizing 50% of their current allocation will have their allocation reduced by a minimum of 10%

March 1

First Day a department can advertise for a summer position

April 15

All current Academic Year or Spring Term recruitments will be removed from PageUP and the UND Careers Page.

May 1-31

Federal Work Study Allocation requests open for the upcoming Academic year

Spring Graduation/Last Day of Spring Term

  • All current Academic Year or Spring Term recruitments will be closed.
  • Last day a student with a spring term graduation can work in a student position
  • Student Employees who are not returning for the summer or upcoming academic year should be terminated in HCM.

June 1

Last day a department can do an FWS correction for the current fiscal year

June 15

  • Department Federal Work Study allocations will be awarded and uploaded to the FWS database
  • First day a department can advertise for an upcoming academic
