Why minor in French?

More than 890 million people across the globe speak and use French, making it one of the most widely studied, spoken, read and influential modern languages. French is an essential language for anyone who wishes to communicate in local, national, and/or international fields of business, STEM, diplomacy, human rights, aviation, athletics, literature, culture and art.

As a French minor at UND, you will be immersed in French and Francophone languages, cultures, literature, film and art from 75 nations and geographic regions that are members of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF).

Once you have completed your French minor, you can continue your study of French by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in French. This will enrich your academic journey and further expand your expertise in this essential global language.

What majors pair well with a French minor?

Our students have paired a minor in French with a variety of majors, including:

  • Education Degrees: A minor in French is valuable for those looking to teach languages and cultural studies across the globe. Knowledge of French and the French-speaking world is an asset in all educational settings.
  • Global Studies Degree: French is spoken in North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asis, Antarctica, Oceania and the Caribbean. As such, French assists with the study of global cultures, societies, political systems and economies.
  • History Degree: Given the wide scope of the former French and Belgian global colonial empires, historians can conduct research in the field as well as in archives, libraries, and other sites of historical memory across the globe.
  • Music Degree: French is a significant language throughout the centuries and across the globe. The study of French will provide a deeper insight into music history, theory and performance practice.
  • Political Science Degree: A minor in French is applicable to students interested in global politics, international relations, human rights and diplomacy.
  • Pre-med Degrees: A minor in French will help future medical providers practice medicine and work with teams of medical researchers across the globe. Global humanitarian organizations such as Doctors without Borders use French as a primary language of communication.
