Pre-Medicine Degree

Your path to medical school starts here with a science and liberal arts education in our Pre-Med program.

Blend science and personal interaction with Pre-Medicine at UND to help begin your journey into the medical field. The Pre-Med program will give you expert guidance and the recommended preparation for any medical school. The pre-medicine program gives you the opportunities and support you need to become an excellent candidate for medical school. UND graduates have been accepted into more than 40 medical schools across the United States, including top-ranked programs.

Work with your academic advisor to craft an individualized plan of study to ensure you complete all medical school prerequisites on time. You'll take those required courses with caring and experienced faculty who are experts in their fields. You'll also get the chance to take advanced classes and work alongside faculty in research labs. Specialized programming and regular communication help pre-health students stay on track, utilize development opportunities, and successfully navigate the application process including preparing for entrance exams and interviews. 

Pre-Med Majors

Stand out by combining pre-medicine with your choice of major. Since medical schools do not require any particular major, pre-medicine students have completed such majors as:

Physicians and surgeons are in high demand, with an increased growth rate projected for the future. In addition, wages for physicians and surgeons are among the highest of all occupations.

Pre-Medicine Courses

BIOL 150. General Biology I. 3 Credits.

Basic concepts of biology with emphasis on the process of science, metabolism, cell biology, plant and animal form and function, and physiology. Broadly designed to satisfy the needs of those pursuing biological and preprofessional curricula. F.

CHEM 341. Organic Chemistry I. 3 Credits.

Designed for science and pre-professional students. Structure and bonding, acid-base reactions, nomenclature, stereochemistry, functional groups, alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides and alcohols. Application of spectrometric methods (NMR, IR and MS) for identification of organic compounds. Prerequisites: CHEM 122 with a grade of C or better and CHEM 122L; or CHEM 254 and CHEM 254L. Corequisite: CHEM 341L. F,S.

COMM 380. Health Communication. 3 Credits.

Introduces theories and practices of health communication. Explores health communication with interpersonal sources (e.g., physicians & other providers), groups (e.g., support groups & healthcare organizations), and effective communication through mass media and digital/social media channels. F.

PHIL 251. Ethics in Health Care. 3 Credits.

Some ethical problems and ethical guidelines are of particular concern to citizens and to professionals interested in health care fields. Examples are informed consent, abortion, euthanasia, organ transplant policies, professional standards versus patient rights, assisted suicide, ethics of testing/screening, health care policy and reform. Class members will explore such issues through case studies in a context of relevant ethical history and theory. Junior/senior standing encouraged. S.

PHE 101. Introduction to Public Health. 3 Credits.

Introduction to the population health approach to public health. Principles of evidence-based public health and tools for implementation including health communications and informatics, applications of social and behavioral sciences, and health policy, law and ethics. Methods for addressing non-communicable diseases, communicable disease and environmental diseases and injury. An overview of the U.S. health care system and comparisons with health care systems in other developed countries. Examination of public health institutions and systems at the local/state, federal and global levels as well as future issue in public health. F,S.
