Districts across the nation are looking to improve their assessment and grading policies and practices by shifting to standards-, competency- and formative feedback- based initiatives.

At UND, you’ll be part of the only masters-level program in the US that includes a K-12 grading and reporting course in its curriculum.

UND's graduate certificate in Mastery Learning can be earned:

  1. As a stand alone certificate by completing the three (3) designated mastery learning courses.
  2. Stacked with our master's in Teaching & Leadership graduate degree program. Meaning, you could earn both a master’s degree and this Mastery Learning graduate certificate all at once inside 30 total credits.

PK-12 Education Partnerships in North Dakota

The master's in Teaching & Learning program serves as a primary partner for pK-12 school districts throughout the state of North Dakota. Collaboratively designed with school district leaders using a cohort approach, we offer partner districts tailored learning pathways that meet their unique needs, contexts, and strategic aims. School district partnerships may be delivered in online, in-person, and hybrid formats.

Burgum Foundation Rural Educator Scholarship

Teachers currently employed in a public North Dakota pK-12 school district may be eligible to receive tuition support for our Master of Science in Teaching & Leadership program or Mastery Learning Graduate Certificate through a Burgum Foundation Rural Educator Scholarship. This scholarship covers a significant portion of total tuition costs.

To receive scholarship funds, select rural educators commit to teaching and/or assuming a leadership role in their rural ND school district for up to 3 years after graduation and work collaboratively with a UND-Rural Scholars Advisor while enrolled as a graduate student at UND. UND-Rural Scholar Advisors help students align classwork to rural school-specific needs and create a culminating scholarly project that addresses a rural school or district priority.

EDL 512. Leading K-12 Classroom Assessment and Grading. 3 Credits.

This course provides educators, school leaders, and instructional support staff with an understanding of how to design and use classroom assessments so they are an aligned part of the instructional process to inform both teachers' corrective action and student learning improvements. This course also explores how to implement effective classroom grading policies and practices so that reported grades are more fair, accurate, and meaningful for students. S,SS.

EDL 513. Leading K-12 Curriculum and Instruction. 3 Credits.

This course provides school leaders the ability to understand major curriculum design models, interpret school district curricula, initiate needs analyses, plan and implement with staff a framework for instruction, align curriculum with anticipated outcomes, monitor social and technological developments as they affect curriculum, and adjust instructional content as needs and conditions change. F.

T&L 579. Inquiry into Professional Practice. 3 Credits.

Students in TL 579 will explore theoretical constructs such as Living Theory, Self-Study, and Critical Theory to understand the role of professional and practitioner inquiry in researching and improving their own practice. Students will plan and conduct an in-depth inquiry project culminating in a case study within their professional setting. Prerequisite: T&L graduate status. S.
