Internship Program Admissions

Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:

The University of North Dakota University Counseling Center (UCC) offers a full-time, 12-month doctoral internship in health service psychology designed for trainees seeking a generalist training experience in a university counseling center setting. Our program is best suited for applicants who wish to develop competence across the full range of profession-wide competencies—assessment, intervention, consultation, outreach, supervision, and ethical and professional identity development—while working with a diverse student population.

Applicants should have completed a minimum of three years of doctoral training, including required coursework, comprehensive exams, and practicum experiences in intervention and assessment, with an approved dissertation proposal by the time of application. While enrollment in an APA- or CPA-accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology is preferred, we have considered applicants from programs under review when their preparation is otherwise strong. A background check will be completed following the APPIC Match prior to the start of internship.

Our selection process emphasizes applicants’ breadth of practicum experience, multicultural competence, quality of clinical writing and communication, and fit with the program’s generalist, practitioner-scholar model. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and identities and value interns who share our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive care.

In sum, this program is a strong fit for applicants seeking a supportive, high-impact training environment that provides broad preparation for entry-level practice in health service psychology, with distinctive opportunities in college mental health, outreach, supervision, and specialty assessment contexts.
