Walsh to McVey Transition
The renovation of Brannon Hall is anticipated to be completed in summer 2022 for the opening of the hall for fall 2022. McVey Hall is scheduled to be completed in early to mid-fall 2022 after students complete Welcome Weekend Move-In. The new courtyard and walkway system connecting to Wilkerson Commons will not be completed until spring 2023.
We know that students will be excited for the opportunity to live in McVey Hall, and the University would like students to experience McVey Hall as soon as they are able. With this, students who self-select Walsh Hall during the New Student Room Selection process will transition their room assignment to McVey Hall during the fall 2022 semester and remain in McVey Hall for the spring 2023 semester. Walsh Hall will be closed for the spring 2023 semester. We are anticipating moves to take place sometime from November through the end of the fall semester and will release a fully outlined moving plan by August 15, 2022.
UND Housing & Residence Life recognizes that a mid-year move could be stressful and challenging for students, and will offer the following accommodations to the impacted students.
Professional Moving Company Provided
If students decide to opt-in to this service, a professional moving company will coordinate a process with Housing & Residence Life staff to move students’ belongings from Walsh Hall to McVey Hall.
No Change in the Room Rate
For the spring 2023 semester only, students who are required to transition their room assignment from Walsh Hall to McVey Hall will pay the same rate for a McVey Hall assignment as they would for their Walsh Hall assignment. Due to facility improvements, Brannon, McVey, and West Halls are expected to have higher rates than other residence hall options. We will honor the lower Walsh room rate for students who are required to move to McVey Hall for the 2022-2023 academic year.
Please note that all dates and timelines are anticipated and are subject to change.
Frequently Asked Questions
We will accept requests for students not assigned to Walsh Hall for fall 2022 to move to McVey Hall, but the priority will be for Walsh Hall residents to have a space in McVey Hall. A formal request process will be established at a later date. Students choosing to move to McVey Hall, but not required to move, will be subject to the new McVey Hall rate.
Our goal is to get students a McVey Hall room assignment at the same time they receive their Walsh Hall room assignment. The goal is to keep roommate groups together as much as possible.
Our primary objective is to keep everyone together, in the same room, suites, and floors, but in some cases, we may not be able to meet everyone’s needs.
Walsh Hall will be closed for the spring 2023 semester, so students will not be able to remain in the building. If a student does not want to move to McVey Hall for spring 2023, staff will work to identify alternative living options.
Requests from students living in Walsh Hall for fall 2022 to move to another hall besides McVey Hall for spring 2023 will be considered based on space availability. Please note that moving services will only be available to students who are required to move from Walsh Hall to McVey Hall.
We anticipate having moves take place beginning in November and being complete by the end of the fall semester. A full moving plan will be outlined and communicated by August 15, 2022. We plan to present this information to students and interested guardians/parents at an open forum during Welcome Weekend.
A moving company has been hired and contracted to assist with moves from Walsh Hall to McVey Hall. In some instances, students may feel more comfortable moving their own items. Students who decline to utilize these moving services will not be eligible for compensation for moving items on their own.
Yes, you will have to pack items into boxes or totes. We plan to provide additional boxes or totes for students to utilize for the move.
No, Housing & Residence Life will provide the moving services at no additional cost to students who utilize the services.
The Residence Hall Room and Meal Plan Agreement are for the full academic year, and students are required to maintain occupancy on campus through the spring 2023 semester.
We hope for no items to be damaged during the moves, but if items are damaged by the moving company during the transition, a process will be established for students to request reimbursement for the damaged item(s).
