BIOL 151L: General Biology II Lab provides students with practical experience applying the concepts of genetics, molecular biology, evolution, biodiversity, and ecology through laboratory investigations, scientific research, and data analysis. Designed to complement General Biology II, this course emphasizes scientific inquiry and the skills biologists use to study living systems and communicate scientific discoveries.
The course offers guided activities using household items (no lab kit required) and virtual activities through the Pearson MyLab system, which is required and is purchased as an accompaniment to the BIOL 151 textbook.
Students engage in a variety of activities that explore core biological topics including genetics, biotechnology, systematics, evolution, microbiology, plant biology, fungi, animal diversity, ecology, and symbiotic relationships. Through these investigations, students gain a deeper understanding of how biological theories are tested, how organisms are classified, and how living systems interact with one another and their environments.
The course includes laboratory experiences focused on biotechnology and restriction enzymes, natural and artificial selection, energy dynamics, Gram staining techniques, plant responses to environmental stress, animal behavior, and ecological relationships. Students also explore contemporary issues in biology and connect laboratory findings to current scientific research and real-world applications.
In addition to hands-on laboratory activities, students complete interactive biology simulations that provide experience with experimental techniques commonly used in modern biological research. These simulations strengthen conceptual understanding while helping students develop practical scientific skills in a flexible online environment.
A major component of the course is scientific communication. Students complete synthesis papers that encourage reflection and integration of biological concepts, as well as a research paper that develops skills in evaluating scientific literature, interpreting data, and presenting evidence-based conclusions. These assignments help students build the analytical and communication skills necessary for success in biology, healthcare, environmental science, and research careers.
Delivered in a flexible, self-paced format, BIOL 151L helps students strengthen their understanding of biological principles while gaining valuable experience in scientific investigation, critical thinking, and professional scientific communication.
