Enroll Anytime Exams
There are many options for securing exams and the specific method may vary by course.
Many Self-Paced Enroll Anytime courses require proctored exams using one of the methods below. All exam proctoring methods are free, with no additional cost to students. Please check the Blackboard course site and/or syllabus to determine the specific proctoring method used for your course.
All students are expected to abide by the academic integrity guidelines as outlined in the UND Code of Student Life. Please see the FAQ section for answers to frequently asked questions.
Exam Proctoring Guidelines
- If the exam is proctored, students must take the exam in a private, well-lit room. There should be no one else in the room when taking the exam and students should not speak out-loud during the exam (unless approved through an accessibility accommodation). Clear your work area of any papers, notes, books, and mobile devices.
- In your course you will find an exam information page that explains the format of each exam and what is allowed or not allowed (such as open book, open note, calculator, scratch paper, etc.). Please review that information.
- Generally, you will be required to verify your identity by requiring to see a non-expired valid photo ID (i.e. driver’s license, passport, etc.).
- For some exams, Honorlock will ask you to create a camera pan of the testing area to ensure exam integrity.
- Students are not allowed to open any browsers or computer files during an online exam, unless specified in the exam as a permitted resource.
- Do not leave the room, except for an emergency, unless specified in the exam instructions.
Honorlock
Honorlock is a remote proctoring service that creates a fair testing environment for all students by protecting exams and academic integrity. Honorlock provides a hybrid approach that allows students to start a proctoring session at any time (without scheduling) while being monitored by a combination of AI and live proctors.
Honorlock’s proctoring software monitors your exam session and alerts a live test proctor if it detects any problems.
This means that you won’t be watched during the entire exam.
Once alerted, Honorlock's human proctors have the opportunity to assess the situation and then enter your exam session, via chat, to help you get back on track.
Honorlock is integrated with Blackboard and uses a Chrome extension to connect for proctoring. To get started with Honorlock, please review the following resources:

Prepare for your Exam
- Make sure your computer/laptop is fully charged and you have a working webcam and microphone connected.
- Make sure you are using the Google Chrome browser.
- Install the Honorlock Chrome Extension
- Check your system at honorlock.com/support.
- Find a quiet, private, well-lit location to limit potential flags and distractions.
- Be sure the desk or table is cleared of all other materials. This means removing all books, papers, notebooks, calculators, cellphones, etc. unless specifically permitted in posted guidelines for that particular examination.
- You may be asked to complete a room scan of your testing area before starting the exam.
- Have a photo ID available for identity verification (UND-issued student ID card or government-issued driver's license, passport, etc.)
Take your Exam
- When you are ready to complete your exam, go to https://blackboard.UND.edu/. Note: Honorlock will not work if you are using https://blackboard.NDUS.edu.
- Log in to Blackboard using only your first.last username and your password.
- Navigate to your Blackboard course and click on the exam link. Then click Begin.
- Follow the steps in the How to Use Honorlock (Test Takers) user guide.
Troubleshooting Tips
- If you are prompted for a password or access code, verify that you are using https://blackboard.UND.edu/ to sign into Blackboard. Note: Honorlock will not work if you are using https://blackboard.NDUS.edu.
- Also make sure you are using Google Chrome and have the Honorlock Chrome Extension installed or enabled. Other proctoring extensions (ProctorU/Proctorio) should be uninstalled from Chrome.
- Your exam session may pause briefly if Honorlock's AI no longer detects your image within the camera feed. Once you refocus your face within the webcam, the AI will automatically resume your exam session where you left off.
Honorlock Support
- Support access is built into Honorlock in real time. Faculty and students can contact support by live chat within the Honorlock window in Blackboard, by phone (855-828-4004), and/or by email at support@honorlock.com.

YuJa and LockDown Browser
Some SPEA courses utilize YuJa Proctoring with Respondus LockDown Browser.
YuJa Exam Proctoring
YuJa Exam Proctoring uses screen capture and webcam recording to ensure the security of student exams taken from remote locations. YuJa's Proctor Recorder also ensures that the recording is only securely allocated to a centralized instructor folder, which will avoid distribution of the exam recording by the student. It is also compatible with Mac and Windows.
Respondus LockDown Browser
Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure custom web browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard; test-takers are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Instructors may opt to add exceptions (e.g., allow printing or access to a certain web page). When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit for grading. It's compatible with Mac and Windows.
If you are required to use LockDown Browser concurrently with YuJa Proctoring for your exam, please follow instructions for using Respondus LockDown Browser with YuJa Proctoring. Be sure to complete the preparation steps in those instructions before you attempt the exam. The article also walks through the steps you will take once you are ready to complete the test.
If you encounter technical problems while taking the exam, please contact UND Tech Support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a question that isn't answered here? Please contact your instructor or UND Technical Support.
Am I being watched by a proctor during my exam?
Yes and no. Honorlock uses AI technology to monitor your session. If it detects certain actions, such as leaving the testing area, it may prompt a live proctor to review your session and if necessary, conduct a live pop-in to address the issue. The proctor will assess the situation, help you get back on track, and send any notes about the incident to your instructor or exam administrator. After your test, one of our exam proctors may review the exam session to look for any potential violations, and the full recording will also be sent to your instructor or exam administrator along with any notes from our proctors.
Do I need to schedule my exam?
Some UND courses use ProctorU Live+ as the proctoring method, which requires scheduling an exam session. With Honorlock you may take your exam at any time.
What if I am disconnected from the exam or receive a submission error?
If you are disconnected from your exam due to a technical or internet issue, log back in to Blackboard and navigate to your exam. If you are able to do so, click into the exam to re-launch the proctoring session, which will take you through the same verification steps. Resume your exam. If you are not able to resume your exam or it auto-submits due to the disconnect, contact your instructor immediately to report the issue.
If you have an issue with Honorlock but the Blackboard exam is not disrupted, begin a chat with Honorlock support.
When I click on the exam, why I am prompted for a password?
If you are prompted for a password after you click on the exam link, you may be logged in to blackboard.NDUS.edu, and Honorlock will not work. To fix this issue:
- Close Blackboard and your browser completely.
- Reopen your browser and log in again at blackboard.UND.edu using only your first.last username and your password. If you include @ndus.edu behind your username, Blackboard will switch to the NDUS site, which will not allow Honorlock to launch.
What are the technical requirements for proctored exams? Are there special requirements for exams taken with ProctorU Auto with Review?
- All exams will be accessed through the Blackboard course. A computer with strong Internet access must be available. A hard connection (via ethernet cable) is preferred, if possible.
- Honorlock requires the Google Chrome browser with the Honorlock extension.
