Enroll Anytime Exams
There are many options for securing exams and the specific method may vary by course.
Many Self-Paced Enroll Anytime courses require proctored exams using one of the methods below. All exam proctoring methods are free, with no additional cost to students. Please check the Blackboard course site and/or syllabus to determine the specific proctoring method used for your course.
All students are expected to abide by the academic integrity guidelines as outlined in the UND Code of Student Life. Please see the FAQ section for answers to frequently asked questions.
Exam Guidelines
- If the exam is proctored, students must take the exam in a private, well-lit room. There should be no one else in the room when taking the exam and students should not speak out-loud during the exam (unless approved through an accessibility accommodation).
- For Live+ exams, ProctorU will ask to see a camera pan of the testing area to ensure exam integrity. Students who do not wish to comply with a camera pan of the testing area, should contact their instructor to discuss alternative testing options.
- Students are not allowed to open any browsers or computer files during an online exam, unless specified in the exam as a permitted resource.
- Do not leave the room, except for an emergency, unless specified in the exam instructions.
- If your exam is with ProctorU, you will be asked to remove any papers, notes, books, calendars, personal items (phone, purse, photos) and other unpermitted resources.
- Students will not be allowed to take the exam with books, notes, or reference aids of any kind unless specified in the exam instructions.
- If your exam is with ProctorU, they will verify your identity by requiring to see a non-expired valid photo ID (i.e. driver’s license, passport, etc.).
- Do not print, copy, or retain the exam.
- ProctorU will troubleshoot exam problems that arise during your session with them.
Honorlock
After a comprehensive review process of existing proctoring vendors, Honorlock has been selected as the new proctoring solution for UND. Honorlock provides a hybrid approach that allows students to start a proctoring session at any time (without scheduling) while being monitored by a combination of AI and live proctors.
Honorlock is integrated with Blackboard and uses a Chrome extension to connect for proctoring. To get started with Honorlock, please review the following resources:

- Install the Honorlock Chrome Extension
- Check your system at honorlock.com/support.
- Find a quiet, private, well-lit location to limit potential flags and distractions.
- Be sure the desk or table is cleared of all other materials. This means removing all books, papers, notebooks, calculators, cellphones, etc. unless specifically permitted in posted guidelines for that particular examination.
- You may be asked to complete a room scan of your testing area before starting the exam. Students who do not wish to comply with a camera pan of the testing area, should contact their instructor to discuss alternative proctoring options.
- Have a photo ID available for identity verification (UND-issued student ID card or government-issued driver's license, passport, etc.)
Take your Exam
- When you are ready to complete your exam, go to https://blackboard.UND.edu/. Note: Honorlock will not work if you are using https://blackboard.NDUS.edu.
- Navigate to your Blackboard course and click on the exam link. Then click Begin.
- Follow the steps in the How to Use Honorlock (Test Takers) user guide.
Troubleshooting Tips

Additional Information for Math Course Exams
With the exception of MATH 208, the Self-Paced Enroll Anytime Math courses follow these additional exam instructions.
All exams are online and proctored by ProctorU Live+. Most courses allow students to use scratch paper. Students must print several pages of the Written Work Template before the exam, which is posted in the Blackboard course. The exams are split into two parts:
- The first part contains the exam questions and has multiple-choice answers. This part is worth a smaller number of points.
- The majority of exam points come from your supporting written work, which should be completed on the Written Work Template pages printed before taking the exam. The written work must be submitted within 10 minutes of completing the multiple-choice portion.
Students need to follow these steps to take the exam and submit their supporting written work:
- Log into the ProctorU portal and connect to a proctor at your scheduled appointment time. Once connected, click on the exam link in your course.
- Before you begin the test, hold up your blank/pre-printed template sheets to the camera (front and back) to show that they are blank.
- The ProctorU proctor will enter the password. Click start to begin the test. The timer will begin and the test cannot be paused or stopped.
- Write out the problem and your work for each problem.
- Make sure your writing is legible and coherent. If you do not use the provided template, make sure to mark each problem clearly. This is NOT scratch work.
- At the end of the exam, hold up the written work to the camera so that each page is visible in the recording. This must be done before you disconnect from the proctor. DO NOT tear up your written work yet.
- Once you have finished the Questions portion of the test, click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.
The next steps should be completed before disconnecting your ProctorU session. If the proctor disconnects, you must still continue with the following steps. - Scan or take a picture of your written work. Save it as a single PDF.
- Click on the L# Exam # - Written Work link, posted directly below the exam link, and submit the PDF file of your written work. You must submit a single PDF file with all your pages in the correct orientation.
- Once submitted destroy the papers, the scratch paper, and any other exam work from both your computer and your phone.
Your written work must be submitted within 10 minutes of completing your Blackboard test. If you do not submit the written work within 10 minutes, you might not get full points on the test even if you scored 100% on the Blackboard exam.
If you followed all the procedures and tested your equipment prior to the test and experience any technical issues during your test, you must contact the instructor by email immediately to explain your situation. Failure to comply with these instructions may result in a grade of zero on the test.
ProctorU Auto
ProctorU Auto with Review
With the proctoring method ProctorU Auto with Review, a live proctor is not present and you do not need to schedule an appointment. The session begins with an automated identity verification process and your audio/video and screen are recorded throughout the exam. The exam recording is then reviewed by a professional ProctorU proctor and instructors are notified of any potential exam integrity issues.
You do not schedule Auto with Review exams. After following the steps below, you will go directly to your exam in Blackboard and begin when you are ready.
Please note: UND has not transitioned to the ProctorU Guardian browser yet. Some Blackboard and ProctorU screens may include text or instructions about the Guardian browser. Please disregard any references to the Guardian browser and follow the instructions below instead.
Prepare for the Exam
- Review System Requirements.
- Download Chrome or Firefox web browser, if needed.

YuJa and LockDown Browser
Some SPEA courses utilize YuJa Proctoring with Respondus LockDown Browser.
YuJa Exam Proctoring
YuJa Exam Proctoring uses screen capture and webcam recording to ensure the security of student exams taken from remote locations. YuJa's Proctor Recorder also ensures that the recording is only securely allocated to a centralized instructor folder, which will avoid distribution of the exam recording by the student. It is also compatible with Mac and Windows.
Respondus LockDown Browser
Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure custom web browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard; test-takers are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Instructors may opt to add exceptions (e.g., allow printing or access to a certain web page). When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit for grading. It's compatible with Mac and Windows.
If you are required to use LockDown Browser concurrently with YuJa Proctoring for your exam, please follow instructions for using Respondus LockDown Browser with YuJa Proctoring. Be sure to complete the preparation steps in those instructions before you attempt the exam. The article also walks through the steps you will take once you are ready to complete the test.
If you encounter technical problems while taking the exam, please contact UND Tech Support.
