This course is designted to increase your competence at the intersection of the practice of vocational rehabilitation, medical science, and the human experience of disability. The course takes an interdisciplinary approach to learning the medical and psychosocial information regarding chronic illnesses and disabilities in rehabilitation counseling practice. Upon successful completion of the course, you should be competent to
- Define common medical terminology, medical treatments, and procedures;
- Give examples of functional impact of chronic illnesses and disabilities;
- Identify principles of health and wellness that can improve the lives of persons with chronic illnesses and disabilities; how public health initiatives can be applied to improving health and well-being of individuals with disabilities;
- Apply medical information for rehabilitation counseling and rehabilitation planning;
- Identify roles of various health care professionals and the process of interdisciplinary health and rehabilitation teamwork;
- Give examples of medical treatments, complementary and alternative medicine approaches, assistive technology, health promotion, and prevention efforts to reduce or accommodate for the functional limitations and impact of chronic health conditions using ADA compliant methods;
- Identify vocational, psychosocial, and independent living implications of various medical disabilities and chronic illness; and
- Define health care delivery and payment systems
Students have 3 to 9 months to complete 13 lessons and two reflection notes, all designed to focus your study of medical and psychosocial aspects of disabilities and to assist you in achieving the course learning objectives/outcomes. You will work through a combination of required readings, captioned videos, and lectures. The lesson topics are:
