Why Take Diversity in American Society Online?

Why do people experience the same society in different ways? How do history, institutions and current events influence the opportunities people encounter and the ways they understand the world?

SOC 250 introduces students to the study of diversity through sociology and related social science perspectives. You’ll learn how identities and worldviews are shaped by social structures, historical events, cultural affiliations and individual experiences. The course also examines theories of identity development, intergroup relations, prejudice and discrimination.

Across 18 lessons and 3 exams, you’ll explore topics including race and ethnicity, sex and gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, socioeconomic status, sociopolitical movements, digital identity, diversity and inclusion, cultural competency, communication, activism and contemporary social issues.

By completing the course, you will be better prepared to recognize social and cultural differences, analyze the forces that shape people’s perspectives, assess the real-world consequences of inequality and engage meaningfully with people whose identities and experiences differ from your own.

The course includes lesson quizzes, application assignments and three unit exams. Its self-paced online format allows you to progress through a clearly organized sequence of lessons while applying course concepts to real-world situations.

Required Course Materials

SOC 250 uses a variety of Open Education Resources (OER) made available through the University of North Dakota's libraries and other free online sources. Permalinks and other access points for all assigned readings are made available in the Lesson modules in which they are assigned and due.

How will the course appear on my transcript?

You may enroll at any time and have up to 9 months to complete this online course. The credits earned will be recorded on your UND transcript based on the date you registered for the course. It will appear on your transcript in the same way as a course taken during a regular semester. There is no indication that the course was taken online or that you completed it at your own pace.
