Why take Collaborative Relationships: Home, School and Community?
A course appropriate for anyone working with families, early childhood educators, general educators, special educators, related service personnel, administrators and outside agency personnel. Topics covered include:
- the various models of collaboration and consultation and the stages of each
- communication skills
- problem-solving
- conflict management
- diverse perspectives
- information collection procedures
- supervisory skills
- family characteristics and structure
- family focused intervention
- school choices
- school issues such as poverty, domestic violence, teasing, bullying, and school violence.
You have 3 to 9 months from your enrollment date to complete 10 lessons. There are no proctored exams. During the course you will complete various types of assignments, which include readings, analysis of videos, and critiquing articles. Some activities offer the choice or submitting a written reflection or a video reflection. Here are a few of the activities in the course:
- Lesson Activities Complete the quiz, activity, or write a response to weekly questions posed by the instructor.
- Teaching with Poverty in Mind Activities Complete readings about poverty, the risk factors of poverty, teaching, and engagement. Write a reflective response to questions.
- Bullying Perspectives and Toolkits After viewing materials about bullying, write a short paper addressing social, cultural, and educational perspectives on bullying.
- Listening to Families Project Narrated Presentation Identify a family who has a child with a disability/extraordinary ability, is from a different ethnic background, or has experienced difficulties in their lives. The family may be dependent of your area of interest and specialization. Share your interviews/project with the class by posting a narrated presentation highlighting collaborative themes from the project. During a lesson, you will outline your interview questions and write an introduction to the family.

How will the course appear on my transcript?
You may enroll at any time and have up to 9 months to complete this online course. The credits earned will be recorded on your UND transcript based on the date you registered for the course. It will appear on your transcript in the same way as a course taken during a regular semester. There is no indication that the course was taken online or that you completed it at your own pace.
