Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training
The Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) program aims to develop and expand the behavioral health workforce through improved training and by providing stipends to graduate level students in UND behavioral health programs.
Support interdisciplinary training, integration of behavioral health with primary care, and increasing the number of field placements with a focus on serving persons in high need, high demand areas, including rural, vulnerable, and/or medically underserved communities. A special emphasis of training is on children and adolescents.
About BHWET
Who is eligible to receive stipends?
- Full-time field placements must be no less than six months and no more than 12 consecutive months at approved sites that meet the HRSA BHWET program requirements to serve rural and/or undeserved populations. Additional sites can be submitted for approval and are encouraged.
- Part-time students are allowed to receive stipends prorated at one-half of the fixed amount for no more than 24 consecutive months.
- Students receiving a stipend or students in paraprofessional programs receiving tuition support in the BHWET Program must be a citizen of the United States, a non-citizen national of the United States, or a foreign national who possesses a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible to participate.
- Priority status will be given to trainees choosing placement sites that serve high need and high demand areas, rural populations, children and adolescents, and/or are located in North Dakota.
Programs
UND graduate students completing their final field placements or internships, prior to graduation, in the following programs:
- Doctoral PhD in Clinical Psychology, Psychology Department, College of Arts & Sciences
- Doctoral PhD in Counseling Psychology, Education, College of Education & Human Development
- Master of Arts in Counseling (Addiction, K-12 School Counseling, and/or Mental Health), College of Education & Human Development
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines
- Masters of Social Work, Department of Social Work, College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines
- Psychiatric Residency, School of Medicine & Health Sciences
How much are the stipends?
Payments are direct deposited on a monthly basis. Date of deposit is subject to variation depending on UND workload.
- Masters-level recipients may receive $25,000.
- Doctoral-level recipients may receive $32,500.
- Residency-level recipients may receive $60,000.
What is expected of individuals receiving the stipends?
Each BHWET stipend recipient is required to:
- Complete assigned activities in clinical placements in high need, high demand areas, including rural, vulnerable, and/or medically underserved communities
- Participate in practice activities that integrate behavioral health and primary care
- Participate in the Interprofessional Consultation Team sessions. These two-hour online videoconference sessions occur in the evening, once a month throughout placement
- Complete training and clinical work in telepsychology services (as applicable)
- Complete didactic training in interprofessional healthcare (if not already demonstrated as part of the selection process)
- Demonstrate cultural and linguistic competency as measured by program competency assessments
- Complete BHWET program evaluation and participate in an interview with BHWET program staff upon completion of the clinical experience

If you are interested in the BHWET stipend program, you can complete an online application. The application link will be available beginning January 2026 for the 2026-2027 academic training year. Review of applications will begin on March 15. Applications completed after this date may not be considered. Once the application is received, BHWET will collaborate with your program to determine if awarded- and notify you as soon as possible.
