Why earn an accountancy master's?

The professional track is designed for students holding an undergraduate accounting degree. It will help prepare you for the CPA exam, but it will also provide experiential learning opportunities that will prepare you for success in launching your career.

In less than two-years you can complete your in-person or online Master of Accountancy program and elevate to the next stage of your career.

With 3 start dates per year, you'll have the opportunity to accelerate your job opportunities, add to your foundation in accounting on this step in the pathway to earning your CPA.

Areas of Study

You'll learn to deal with unstructured problems and complex decision making in accounting and business environments. 

The M.Acc. Professional Track has four areas of concentrations, which allows you to customize your learning experience with specialized classes.

Master of Accountancy Programs

UND has a strong tradition of delivering high-quality graduate education in accounting. Our Master of Accountancy program equips students with advanced competencies essential for launching or advancing their careers in the accounting profession. For those without an accounting background or degree, the Fundamentals Track offers an alternative path. Both tracks are designed to prepare students for leadership roles in the evolving accounting field and to excel on the CPA exam.

On-Campus or Online Accountancy Master's

  • Offered by UND's Nistler College of Business & Public Administration and accredited by AACSB International and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Accreditation by AACSB International puts the UND in the top 5% of business schools in the world.

  • Ranked #7 as a best online business degree program by Best Value Schools.

  • Students gain valuable classroom experiences as well as prestigious internship placements at top firms around the country through experiential learning opportunities.

  • The Herr School of Accountancy awards approximately $100,000 annually, in addition to Nistler College and other scholarships, to its students.

  • Students pursuing the professional track can apply to be a Graduate Assistant (GA). These positions allow you to work alongside faculty and staff in the college and hone your research skills and assist with teaching-related activities. 

  • The M.Acc. degree does not specifically lead to licensure, but the degree and/or specific courses taken will count toward licensing requirements in most states.

Accountancy Master's Courses

ACCT 512. Accounting for Governments & Nonprofits. 3 Credits.

This course covers accounting for governmental and nonprofit entities, including fund accounting. Prerequisite: Permission of MAcc Director. S.

ACCT 504. Seminar in Auditing. 3 Credits.

Expands understanding of the auditing function and provides a framework for analyzing contemporary auditing and assurance issues. Prerequisite: Permission of MAcc Director. F.

ACCT 503. Advanced Financial Accounting. 3 Credits.

Accounting for inter-corporate investments, business combinations, and other advanced financial accounting topics. Prerequisite: Permission of MAcc Director. F,S.

ACCT 501. Seminar in Accounting Issues. 3 Credits.

Addresses current issues in accounting and develops appropriate professional judgment through researching and applying accounting standards. Written communication is emphasized. Prerequisite: Permission of MAcc director. F,S.

ACCT 513. Data Analytics in Accounting and Financial Reporting. 3 Credits.

This course prepares students to address business problems support decision decisions through data analysis. Students will develop an intuitive understanding of the concepts, advanced theories, and tools for data analytics. Programing techniques including Python and R are applied to data analytics. Machine learning, data visualization, and RPA (Robotic Process Automation) in accounting are introduced. Prerequisite: ECON 210 or any other statistics or econometrics course. F.

ACCT 511. Federal Taxation 1. 3 Credits.

This graduate-level course is a first course in federal taxation, covering both federal taxation of individuals and businesses. Prerequisite: Permission of MAcc Director. F,S.
