An Esports degree will give you the foundation to step into the gaming industry in a variety of ways. UND's Esports bachelor's degree program will set you on the path to success in the Esports field of your choosing.

  • Enjoy being in the middle of the competition, working closely with a small team to achieve a goal? Become an athlete or coach and put yourself right in the action.
  • Are you more of a big picture person, skilled at organization? Find your place as a general esports manager, graphic designer or marketer on the business side helping put together some of the biggest tournaments in the world. You will also find opportunities in media, such as broadcasting and analysis.

Interdisciplinary Esports Degree

UND's Esports degree is innovative, challenging and at the cutting edge of new developments in academic programming across the country. In fact, it's the first degree of it's kind in North Dakota.

This unique degree has a sports performance focus. It draws on variety of departments to create an all-inclusive approach. You'll be exposed to studies in:

  • Kinesiology including esports coaching, biomechanics, exercise physiology and motor learning
  • Public health including community health and epidemiology
  • Sport business including business administration, risk management, economics, sponsorship and event planning
  • Computer science including programming languages, cyber-security and interface design
  • Communication including advertising, digital imaging, social media and sports communication

These interdisciplinary courses will help tie gaming performance and esports coaching with well-established practices in the traditional sports world.

Esports is a booming industry, with more than 230 million people playing Esports worldwide and another 200 million who watch Esports. While the core viewership group is made up primarily of young adults ages 24 and under, the growth of the industry within education, professional competitions, organizations, broadcasting, media and more is creating a large demand for individuals trained in these fields.

Esports Degree Courses

KIN 343. Esports. 3 Credits.

Introduction to esports and their place in our modern society. Topics include the history, participants, platforms, and future of esports as a global phenomenon with a consideration of opportunities for involvement. On demand.

KIN 340. Esports and Healthy Gaming. 3 Credits.

This course provides an overview of contemporary esports focusing on physical and mental health, including using sport psychology techniques for behavior change. Special topics related to online citizenship behaviors, addiction, and women in gaming are also covered. F, odd years.

KIN 401. Sport Sociology. 3 Credits.

The critical exploration of the function of sports in American culture, in an interdisciplinary fashion, with a focus on the contemporary scene. F,SS.

KIN 243. Introduction to Esports Coaching. 2 Credits.

In the growing world of esports, coaches are of greater importance than ever. In this course, we will explore esports coaching with an introduction to philosophies, organization and administration, player growth and development and student success. S.

KIN 332. Biomechanics. 2 Credits.

The study of human movement with special emphasis on those movements related to sport and physical activity. Prerequisites: KIN or Athletic Training majors only, or consent of instructor. Corequisite: KIN 332L. F,SS.

KIN 440. Sport and Exercise Psychology. 3 Credits.

Examination of psychological constructs influencing sport performance and exercise behavior. S,SS.

College Esports

Serving UND Students and Wellness Center members, the Nexus Esports lounge features 12 top-of-the-line gaming PCs with over 15 titles to choose from including League of Legends, Fortnite, Starcraft II and NBA 2K.
