Why study Military Science / Army ROTC?

In academic and hands-on environments, students learn and utilize leadership skills in demand today in the private sector and in the military. The program offers a wide variety of leadership experiences, academic challenges and unique learning opportunities not available with any other department. The Military Science minor is designed for students who wish to augment the major they are completing in another departmental program.

Entrance into the program imposes no military obligation of any sort.

Military Flight Training Program

In partnership with the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, the UND Army ROTC trains, qualifies, and certifies flight training program cadets in rotary wing, fixed wing, and unmanned aerial systems operations.

Scholarships are available to cover the full cost of the flight training program, with over $168,000 available per qualified student.

This minor is open to all UND students and pairs well with many majors, including:

  • Aerospace Engineering Degree: Provides knowledge in aerospace technology and could lead to careers in military aviation or aerospace defense systems.
  • Aviation Management Degree: Offers expertise in managing aviation operations, which could be beneficial for roles in military aviation logistics or civilian aircraft operations related to defense.
  • Civil Engineering Degree: Offers skills in infrastructure development and construction, which could be valuable for military engineering roles such as building military bases or infrastructure projects in conflict zones.
  • Commercial Aviation Degree: Prepares students for jobs as commercial pilots, flight instructors, or roles in aviation safety administration, potentially serving in capacities that align with military transport and logistics.
  • Computer Science Degree: Provides expertise in technology and computing, which is crucial for roles involving cybersecurity, data analysis, and developing military software and systems.
  • Electrical Engineering Degree: Offers knowledge in electrical systems and electronics, which could be useful for roles involving military communications, radar systems, or weapon systems.
  • Economics Degree: Provides understanding of economic principles, which could be relevant for roles involving resource allocation, budgeting, or economic analysis in military contexts.
  • Management Degree: Provides a broad understanding of business practices and leadership strategies, preparing graduates for managerial roles across various industries. This degree is especially useful for those looking to lead teams, manage operations, or oversee projects within military contexts, offering skills applicable to both civilian and defense-related managerial positions.
  • Nursing Degree: Offers expertise in healthcare, which is valuable for roles in military healthcare services or medical support in deployed settings.
  • Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operations Degree: Focuses on the operation, management, and policy aspects of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), including drones. It prepares students for careers in UAS piloting, operations management, and regulatory compliance, with significant applications in military reconnaissance, surveillance, and tactical planning.

Military Science / Army ROTC at UND

  • No military obligation or commitment.

  • Gain formal leadership education with hands-on experience and lab settings.

  • Take courses from professional leaders in the United States Army.

  • Participate in physical training, leadership lab and in-class instruction.

  • Learn to fly and get your costs covered while in the flight training program offered by the UND Army ROTC.

Military Science Minor Courses

MS 301. Military Science III. 3 Credits.

Series of practical opportunities in leadership and problem solving used to lead small groups, receive personal assessments and encouragement, and lead again in situations of increasing complexity. Uses small unit tactics and opportunities to plan and conduct training for lower division students both to develop such skills and as vehicles for practicing leadership skills. Plan and execute a leadership lab class for the ROTC Battalion. Participation in one weekend exercise is also required, and one or two more weekend exercises may be offered for optional participation. Prerequisite: MS 101, MS 102, MS 201, MS 202 or Basic Combat Training or (CIET) Cadet Initial Entry Training. Corequisite: MS 301L and MS 341. F.

MS 301L. Leadership Lab III. 1 Credit.

Series of practical opportunities to lead small groups, receive personal assessments. Use small unit tactics and opportunities to plan and conduct training for lower division students. Prerequisite: MS 101, MS 102, MS 201, and MS 202. Corequisite: MS 301 and MS 341. F.

MS 341. Military Physical Conditioning III. 2 Credits.

Instruction is on leadership of a company sized element and the phases of fitness conditioning, preparatory conditioning, and maintenance. An essential objective for each student is to achieve a minimum score in the Army Fitness test for record. Corequisite: MS 301 and 301L. F.

HIST 210. United States Military History. 3 Credits.

A survey from colonial times to the present of the Army's role in the formulation and implementation of national defense. Attention is given to the Constitutional and legal status of the Army, changing concepts in military organization and training, public attitudes toward the military, and the influences of the Army on American society. Specific wars and battles are studied in terms of military tactics and strategy. On demand.
