Temporary Medical Conditions and Hospitalized Students
The Community Standards & Care Network Office will attempt to assist students with temporary medical conditions or who are hospitalized to stay enrolled and succeed at UND
It is the student’s responsibility to follow the guidelines below. The Community Standards & Care Network Office cannot guarantee services will be provided in all situations but will make all efforts to assist as possible.
Steps for Arranging Courtesy Services
Courtesy services may be provided to students who need access in the classroom and/or campus environments because of a temporary medical condition, such as a broken leg.
Step 1
- The student is expected to make his/her own arrangements whenever possible. Examples include having a roommate drive the student to class; or borrowing notes from a classmate.
- Requests for possible temporary housing arrangements for students living in the residence halls, University Place, or University apartments can be made by the Housing & Residence Life Office at housing@UND.edu or 701.777.4251.
Step 2
- Students are responsible for contacting each of their faculty members regarding their absence from class and to discuss missed classes or assignments and course expectations.
- At the request of a student, Community Standards & Care Network will notify faculty
regarding a student's absence due to a hospitalization.
- This notification serves as a courtesy notice and not a verification of their absence and will not constitute an excused absence.
- Students are encouraged to coordinate with their instructors for other arrangements
as needed. Other arrangements may include providing someone to transcribe a test,
allowing a verbal format or allowing for a test to be delayed.
- Please note that instructors are not mandated to provide disability accommodations unless the condition is identified as a permanent disability.
- If the student will be absent for a long time, it is important for the student to discuss the situation with his/her instructors to determine the feasibility of remaining in the courses.
- If it is necessary to withdraw from the University after the last day to drop, the student may contact the Community Standards & Care Network Office for information about the Special Circumstance process.
Step 3
If the student is unable to make his/her own arrangements for specific needs, the student may contact the Community Standards & Care Network Office for assistance. The student will be asked to provide a supporting statement from the treating professional.
- This statement must be signed and on letterhead.
- The statement must identify the relevant limitations of the medical conditions such as “cannot walk more than 30 feet".
- The statement must include the approximate length of time the student will be impacted by the medical condition.
Step 4
With appropriate medical documentation, the following services may be available.
Van Service
Students unable to use the campus shuttle service may be able to use a van service to get to and from classes. Once approved by the Community Standards & Care Network Office, the student is responsible for scheduling rides with the Transportation Department 701.777.4030.
- Please note: Students needing a parking permit due to temporary disability that is longer than two weeks should work with their doctor and the North Dakota Department of Motor Vehicles to get a temporary disability parking permit.
Temporary Accessible Parking Permits
Student permit holders may be eligible to obtain a UND accessible permit for two weeks. Once approved by the Community Standards & Care Network Office, the student is responsible for arranging for this temporary permit with the Parking Office 701.777.3551. There is no cost if the student has a permit already.
Students requesting accommodations for a permanent disability are expected to register with Student Disability Resources.
Steps for Hospitalized Students
- As soon as possible, you or a relative should notify your instructors and the Community Standards & Care Network Office at 701.777.2664.
- You should contact your instructors concerning your course work as soon as you are able. If your condition prohibits you from contacting your instructors, you may contact the Community Standards & Care Network Office and request they notify your instructors of your absence. Although this does not represent an excused absence, it does serve as a courtesy notice to your instructors.
- If you will be out of school for an extended length of time, you should contact your professors and your advisor to discuss the most appropriate option in handling course work. Your communication with Community Standards & Care Network may be useful at this time.
- Once you return to school, it is recommended that you make personal contact with your instructors to make sure everything is taken care of regarding your course work, etc.
Withdrawing from School
There is no such thing as a medical withdrawal or medical leave of absence.
If it becomes necessary to withdraw from school, follow these instructions:
If you live in UND housing, receive financial aid, or are involved with a special program (e.g., McNair Program, Native American Program, Veteran & Military Services), you should contact the appropriate office to find out how withdrawing may impact your student status.
In all situations, you should contact your academic advisor to determine the impact of withdrawal on your academic status.
