Bed Lofts/Adjustable Frames

Adjustable beds are located in all the residence halls.

These beds may be set at many different levels (3-inch increments), depending on how you would like to layout your room.

  • All mattresses are 36" wide X 80" long, considered an extra-long twin. A ladder and a railing may be checked-out from the hall office.
  • Two beds may be bunked on the wooden frame. The extra wooden frame must be stored in the student's room.

Bed Loft Safety

Why are lofted beds a concern?

The height of a lofted bed poses a risk to anyone using it. While asleep, individuals aren’t able to recognize falling from that height until it’s too late. Falls from this height can cause a minor to fatal injury. Floors below the beds are often hard and provide no sense of cushion to protect yourself from harm.

What is the goal of a bed rail?

Bed rails attach to the bed frame and extends above the height of the mattress. Rails are meant to serve as a barrier between the open space of the room and the bed. This barrier works to prevent any individual from rolling off their mattress while asleep.

When should I use a bed rail?

Bed rails are encouraged to be used by all residents who have their bed raised to any height, especially above four feet/forty-eight inches. While the risk may increase with the height of the bed, there is a risk posed with any height.

Where to find bed rails?

Bed rails are available to all residents. Bed rails and ladders must remain in your room during check out.

Bed Rail Policy

UND Housing & Residence Life does not currently require any residents to use a bed rail, but they are encouraged.
