Conducting Research Involving Other Organizations

Whenever research involves obtaining participants or data from an organization not affiliated with the University of North Dakota, the researcher is obligated to obtain permission from the organization prior to beginning the research. In some cases, permission may simply be in the form of a letter of support for recruiting participants from the organization. In other instances, an application to another IRB may be required. Below are policies, forms, and links to outside IRBs to assist the researcher in obtaining permission to conduct research at area schools, hospitals, universities, and other organizations.

K-12 School Districts

There is no specific policy in place for conducting research in the East Grand Forks Public Schools. For projects proposing to conduct research in multiple schools within the EGF Public School District, researchers should obtain permission from the Superintendent's office. For projects proposing to conduct research in one school, researchers should obtain permission from the school Principal.

Tribal Governments

The UND IRB recognizes and respects the sovereignty of tribal nations to determine when research may be conducted with their people. When proposing to work within tribal boundaries, researchers must obtain permission from tribal governments (or those designated by tribal authorities) to conduct research on reservations. This usually requires permission from the tribal chairperson or a tribal resolution approved by a convened tribal council.
