Accountability

As UND student organizations, fraternities and sororities are held accountable to the Code of Student Life. In addition, chapters are members of the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council and therefore are also held to a set of values and standards to which all members must adhere. Chapters are held accountable to both the University of North Dakota and/or the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council Judicial Boards.

The UND Code of Student Life

The University of North Dakota's Code of Student Life (CODE) includes information about the rights and responsibilities of students and student organizations, and the ways the University will address alleged CODE violations. The CODE states that the first priority of the judicial system is the safety of students and the campus community. The second priority of the judicial system is to provide educational support to students. When a conduct complaint is filed against a fraternity or sorority chapter, a Student Conduct Advisor investigates the situation and meets with the chapter leaders to determine if the chapter is in violation of the CODE.

Interfraternity Council & Panhellenic Council Judicial Boards

The purpose of the IFC and PHC Judicial Boards are as follows:

  • Self-Governance: Judicial Board members are to identify and adjudicate with violations of the IFC Constitution & Bylaws and the PHC Constitution & Bylaws..
  • Accountability: Accountability identifies the need to quickly and appropriately confront behavior that violates Panhellenic and Interfraternity ideals and policies.
  • Education: Education assures that the judicial process is educational for the chapters involved as well as the fraternity and sorority community.

The IFC Judicial Board consists of six justices who are chosen through an application and interview selection process and are trained on the IFC Judicial Board Policies and the IFC Constitution & Bylaws. Likewise, the PHC Judicial Board consists of three justices who are chosen through an application and interview selection process and are trained on the PHC Judicial Board Policies and the PHC Constitution and Bylaws.

The judicial boards interpret the actions of fraternities and sororities as set forth in the IFC and PHC Constitution & Bylaws and other policies and will hold chapters accountable for violations. The IFC Judicial Board will process all complaints involving UND fraternities, while the PHC Judicial Board will process all complaints involving UND sororities. If there is a situation that arises that involves both a fraternity and a sorority, the complaint will be handled by a Joint Judicial Board which consists of three sorority and three fraternity justices.
