Merrifield Hall and Twamley Hall Construction Project
In November of 2021, the North Dakota Legislature approved $50 million in funding to The University of North Dakota to renovate Merrifield Hall and Twamley Hall. UND will raise the additional $25 million.
Merrifield Hall Renovation
In November 2021, the North Dakota Legislature approved funding to help support the renovation of Merrifield and Twamley Halls on the University of North Dakota campus. Both buildings are located on UND’s core campus and Merrifield Hall is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places.
About Merrifield Hall
Since its completion in 1929 Merrifield Hall has been the heart of the UND campus, housing departments and classes from the College of Arts and Sciences. At the time, it was the largest classroom building in the state of North Dakota with spaces configured for lecture halls and recitation rooms.
Designed by noted architect Joseph Bell DeRemer, the building is a wonderful example of Collegiate Gothic architecture, characterized by its brick exterior, arched entrances lined with limestone, and multipaned windows. It would be hard to find an alumni that does not remember taking a class, studying by the windows, or visiting in the corridors of Merrifield Hall. Many people remark on the beautiful, curved stairwells or the building’s gargoyles that stand watch.
Renovation
The Merrifield renovation project aspires to honor the architecture and rich history of the building while better configuring and equipping the space for the teaching, research and learning needs of today and tomorrow.
The building will be designed with a connected walkway to Twamley Hall which will help house several academic departments within the College of Arts and Sciences. Creating a physical connection between the two buildings will help maintain synergies between the Arts and Science disciplines, students, and classes. By being housed in Merrifield and Twamley Hall, the College of Arts and Sciences will remain both physically and symbolically at the heart of UND.
