Tutoring Expectations
Tutoring is a collaborative educational support system in which current students assist their peers in understanding class material and increase confidence in their academic ability.
Tutors provide guidance and explanations to their peers to enhance the overall learning experience. This form of tutoring is characterized by its emphasis on shared learning, mutual support, and the exchange of knowledge.
Expectations of Students
- Students should recognize that tutors aid in the learning process. They will not do the classwork for the student.
- Meeting with a tutor is not a replacement for attending class and doing required classwork.
- Students must come prepared to work with a tutor. Students are encouraged to have specific questions or topics they would like to discuss with a tutor.
- Students are expected to engage in the learning process and actively participate in the tutoring session. This includes asking questions and providing feedback to the tutor.
- Students are responsible for their own learning and improvement.
- If a student’s tutoring expectations are not being met, the student should reach out to the Tutoring and Testing Coordinator, Yiying Li at yiying.li@UND.edu.
Expectations of Tutors
- Tutors are equipped with training that follows internationally recognized best practices and standards in supporting students in their learning. Upon completion of training, they are certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
- Tutors are expected to possess a strong understanding of the subject matter they are tutoring. This is evidenced by earning an A or B in the class they are tutoring for.
- Tutors adapt their tutoring strategies to meet the individual needs of each student they work with.
- Tutors provide insight into the subject matter they tutor and empower students to become independent learners. This includes motivating and encouraging students to build their confidence and problem-solving skills.
- Tutors help review and reinforce material presented in class.
- Tutors assist students as best they can and refer them to appropriate resources, such as instructors or advisors, as needed.
