UND Sorority Recruitment Frequently Asked Questions

Sorority membership does include a time commitment; however, depending upon your involvement in chapter leadership positions, the time commitment will vary. In general, most chapters have Monday night formal meals and meetings each week. In addition, members attend sisterhood events and educational programming, volunteer, host and attend philanthropic events and dance the night away at social events throughout the semester.

Though a financial commitment is necessary, that commitment comes with many benefits. Cost for sorority membership varies from chapter to chapter; however, the average cost for a member's first semester in a sorority is about $840. The cost for a member's second semester in the sorority is about $680. To help members with the financial expectations, most sororities offer payment plans which allow members to pay in installments throughout the semester. Typically, members move into the sorority house in their second year of membership, and sorority housing often costs less than University housing or living in an apartment.

In today's world very few students can attend college without outside employment. In fact, the majority of the students who are members of fraternities and sororities work part-time jobs. Chapters recognize this and work with members to meet financial and attendance obligations. Many students find sorority membership an advantage in that networking with alumnae sometimes produces job possibilities.

No, joining a sorority will allow you to expand your group of friends by meeting new people, but also provides activities that you may be able to invite your friends to attend with you!

The expectations for joining a sorority vary from chapter to chapter, but for the most-part, chapters expect that new members are enrolled at UND and reach a certain GPA, please ensure that you ask the chapter what their GPA requirement is for membership.

The new member process for sorority chapters is typically four to six weeks long and allows new members the opportunity to learn about the chapter’s history, chapter expectations, UND fraternity and sorority life and chapter membership requirements. Each chapter hosts weekly new member meetings to allow the women an opportunity to get to know their sisters and to learn more about the chapter. After the four to six week educational process has concluded, the new members will be admitted into full membership within the chapter through a process called initiation. Initiation is a ritual within the chapter that is secret; however, all initiation ceremonies are formal customs in which the members learn the sorority’s symbolism including what their letters, emblems and traditions represent. The initiation ceremony is not to be feared as the ceremony is meant to be special event that is a tradition for all chapters.

Hazing is defined by Hazing Prevention.org as "any action taken or situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule, risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of a group or team, whether new or not, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate." The University of North Dakota and all of the UND sorority chapters do not condone or tolerate hazing of any kind. The membership process for all members should be a positive one, and members should never feel uncomfortable, harassed, mistreated or embarrassed. Chapters who are found to be in violation of the Code of Student Life for hazing violations will be held accountable for their actions through the university’s judicial process. In addition, chapters who are found in violation of their individual sorority’s hazing policy will be subject to discipline by their National organization. Hazing has no place in sorority life at UND and it will not be tolerated.
