International and Language Study Scholarships

The following list of scholarships focus on language learning and international study opportunities. Most applications require language skills.  

American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships and Grants

  • Open to all graduating seniors, recent graduates, graduate students, language competency normally required.
  • Applicants may be studying any field, but research must demand presence in Scandinavian country.
  • Usual application deadline: November.
  • The award for American Scandinavian Foundation Academic Fellowships and Grants is $20,000 in fellowship, up to $4000 in grants for study in a Scandinavian country (international).

AMERICAN-SCANDINAVIAN FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS AND GRANTS

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX)-Young Professionals

  • Open to U.S. citizens between the ages of 18–24 with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Applicants from a wide range of fields are encouraged to apply, including business, STEM, vocational trades, agriculture, and the arts. Prior German language experience is not required, though interest in language and cultural exchange is essential.
  • Usual application deadline: Early November
  • The CBYX for Young Professionals program offers a year-long, fully funded fellowship in Germany, including two months of intensive language training, four months of study at a German university or Berufsschule, and a five-month internship in the participant’s career field, with full support for cultural immersion and professional development.

CONGRESS-BUNDESTAG YOUTH EXCHANGE (CBYX)-YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes

  • Open to graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Applicants can be studying any field.
  • Usual application deadline: November.
  • The award for Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes is travel, study, and all program expenses for summer institute language study in countries where “target languages” are spoken.

CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTENSIVE SUMMER INSTITUTES

DAAD-German Academic Exchange Service

  • Open to undergraduate students (sophomore or juniors) or graduate students (seniors who are prospective graduate students)
  • Applicants can be studying any field, but with clear research plan to be conducted in Germany.
  • Usual application deadline: January.
  • The award for German Academic Exchange Service is 4-10 months of undergraduate study or research in Germany; one year of graduate study in Germany, plus travel costs and health insurance (international).

DAAD - GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE SERVICE

DLNSEO Boren Awards

  • Open to undergraduates; includes special application track for ROTC students.
  • Applicants can be studying any field, but language must be the study abroad focus. Post-graduate requirement to seek employment at an appropriate U.S. governmental agency.
  • Usual application deadline: February.
  • The award for National Security Education Program is to study abroad in an area of critical U.S. interest; up to $20,000 for an academic year or $8,000 for a summer (international).

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

  • Open to graduating seniors, recent graduates and graduate students who are U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants from any academic discipline are eligible, with opportunities in research, study, and teaching worldwide. Language skills may be required depending on the country and program.
  • Usual application deadline: Early October.
  • The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers grants for 6–12 months abroad, providing a monthly stipend, travel allowance, and health insurance, along with opportunities for cultural exchange and academic or professional development.

FULBRIGHT U.S. STUDENT PROGRAM 

Fulbright Austria U.S. Teaching Assistantship Program

  • Open to graduating seniors, recent graduates, recent graduates and graduate students who are U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants can be from any academic background, though those with experience in education, English, or German are especially encouraged to apply. German language skills are required, as the position involves assisting in English language instruction at Austrian secondary schools.
  • Usual application deadline: Mid-January.
  • The award for the Fulbright Austria U.S. Teaching Assistantship provides a 10-month placement in an Austrian school, including a monthly stipend and health insurance, with opportunities for cultural exchange and professional development.

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship Program

  • Open to U.S. undergraduate students planning to study abroad for at least four weeks in a credit-bearing program.
  • Students from underrepresented backgrounds, including first-generation and community college students, are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Usual deadlines: Early January for summer/fall/year programs; early September for spring.
  • Awards provide up to $5,000 to support study abroad costs, promoting access and equity in global education.

FUnd for education abroad Scholarship PROGRAM

Gates Cambridge Scholars Program

  • Open to graduates – apply as seniors and prospective graduate students.
  • Applicants can be in any field of graduate study offered at Cambridge University.
  • Usual application deadline: October
  • The award for Gates Cambridge Scholars Program is covered study at Cambridge (international); family stipend available.

GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Gilman International Scholarship Program

  • Open to undergraduate students with financial need who will be studying abroad during the academic year.
  • Applicants can be studying any field.
  • Deadline: Depends on timing of study abroad experience. 
  • The award for Gilman International Scholarship Program is up to $5,000 for study abroad (must be a minimum of four weeks), with amount contingent on amount of Pell grant eligibility (international).

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Gilman Critical Need Language Supplement

  • Open to undergraduates studying Arabic, Chinese, Turkic, Persian, Indic, Korean or Russian.
  • Applicants can be studying any field.
  • Deadline: Depends on timing of study abroad experience. 
  • The award for Gilman Critical Need Language Supplement is up to $8,000 in additional funding for study involving a designated language (international).

GILMAN CRITICAL NEED LANGUAGE SUPPLEMENT

Humanity in Action Fellowship

  • Open to undergraduates and new graduates (sophomores to recent graduates).
  • The award for Humanity in Action Fellowship is a funded travel experience in one of a number of cities, where students focus on intensive, collaborative study of a human rights issue related to minority groups, the Holocaust, and WWII; requires subsequent completion of an action project.

HUMANITY IN ACTION FELLOWSHIP

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program

  • Open to graduating seniors, recent graduates, and young professionals who are U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree by the program start (usually late June) and have an interest in Japan and cross-cultural exchange. Japanese language skills are helpful but not required for ALT positions.
  • Usual deadline: Mid-November for summer departure.
  • The JET Program offers one-year placements in Japan as ALTs or CIRs, with a competitive salary, airfare, health insurance, and cultural immersion opportunities.

Luce Scholars Program

  • Open to graduating seniors, recent graduates, and young professionals who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents under age 32 or within three years of earning a bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants should have limited experience in Asia and show strong leadership potential in any field. No prior regional or language experience is required.
  • Usual deadline: Late October (earlier if applying through a campus nomination).
  • The Luce Scholars Program offers a fully funded year of professional experience in Asia, including tailored placements, language training, and cultural immersion.

LUCE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Marshall Scholarships (United Kingdom)

  • Open to U.S. citizens who are graduating seniors or recent graduates.
  • Applicants from any academic background are eligible; strong academic achievement and leadership potential are essential.
  • Usual application deadline: Early October.
  • The Marshall Scholarship funds 1–2 years of graduate study at any university in the United Kingdom, covering tuition, living expenses, travel costs, and health insurance, with opportunities for academic and cultural engagement.

MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIPS (UNITED KINGDOM)

Princeton in Africa (PiAf) Fellowship Program

  • Open to graduating seniors and recent graduates of any nationality (must have U.S. work authorization).
  • Applicants from all academic backgrounds are welcome. A strong commitment to service, adaptability, and cross-cultural engagement is essential; prior experience in Africa is not required.
  • Usual application deadline: Late October to early November.
  • Princeton in Africa offers yearlong fellowships with NGOs and development organizations across the continent. Fellows gain hands-on experience in sectors like public health, education, and youth development, with housing and a living stipend typically provided by host organizations.

Public Policy and International Affairs Program Fellowship Program

  • Open to undergraduate juniors committed to completing an MA/MS in public and/or international affairs at one of the PPIA Consortium graduate schools.
  • Applicants can be studying any field.
  • Usual application deadline: November.
  • The award for Public Policy and International Affairs Program Fellowship Program is at least $5,000 toward MA/MS tuition, stipend, eligibility for internships and other professional development opportunities.

PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS PROGRAM FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Rhodes Scholarship

  • Open to U.S. citizens who are graduating seniors or recent graduates.
  • Applicants from any academic background are eligible; outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to service are essential.
  • Usual application deadline: Early October.
  • The Rhodes Scholarship funds 2 years of graduate study at the University of Oxford, covering tuition, living expenses, travel, and health insurance, with extensive opportunities for academic, cultural, and leadership development.

RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

Schwarzman Scholars Program

  • Open to seniors preparing to entire intensive one-year grad program in China.
  • Applicants must be studying public policy, international relations, economics and business with Chinese focus included.
  • Usual deadline: October.

SCHWARZMAN SCHOLARS PROGRAM

  • Applicants can be studying any undergraduate discipline, aiming at graduate study in management.
  • Usual application deadline: October (Early Application), January (Traditional Application)
  • The award for Consortium for Graduate Study in Management is fellowship for graduate study.

CONSORTIum FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN MANAGEMENT

  • Open to graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Applicants can be studying any field.
  • Usual application deadline: November.

Donald M. Payne International Development Fellowship

  • Open to graduate students.
  • Applicants may be studying any field that prepared them for graduate study in international affairs or a related subject such as development, economics, history, political science, public policy, foreign languages, etc., at a Payne-approved graduate program.
  • Usual application deadline: October.
  • The award for Donald M. Payne International Development Fellowship is $45,000 annually for two years, part designated for tuition, part for expenses, part for stipend.

DONALD M. PAYNE INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

  • Open to graduates: apply as seniors, recent grads, and grad students (U.S. citizens). 
  • Applicants can be studying any field, but most plan a project that builds cultural understanding. Language competency normally required
  • Usual application deadline: October
  • The award for Fulbright U.S. Student Program is covered expenses for a year of travel and living expenses for overseas study/research; some awards offered for English language teaching (international).
