Research Scholarships
The following list of scholarships focused on research related interests. Most applications require field of study in research.
Undergraduate Students
Asian Pacific Education
- Open to all undergraduate students studying abroad in an eligible country.
- Applicants must be studying any "General Study" (art, international business or international study foreign languages for STA Travel Scholarship.)
- Deadline: April (Fall), August (Spring), December (Summer)
- The award for Asia Pacific Education varies (e.g., $500 vs. $2000). Supports study in Asia-Pacific countries.
AT&T Labs Summer Internship Program
- Open to seniors or students in their first or second year of grad school, female or members of a minority underrepresented in science fields (Hispanic, African-American, or Native American).
- Applicants must be studying computer science, math, statistics, electrical engineering, operations research, systems engineering, industrial engineering, or related fields.
- Usual application deadline: January.
- The award for AT&T Labs Summer Internship Program is all educational expenses during the school year, including travel, summer study or university research, living expenses (currently $2,380 per month, paid for 10 months of the year), conference attendance, a summer internship, and an AT&T mentor.

AT&T Labs Fellowship Program

AT&T LABS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Boren Scholarship
- Open to undergraduates; includes special application track for ROTC students.
- Applicants can be studying any field, but language must be the study abroad focus. Post-graduate requirement to seek employment at an appropriate U.S. governmental agency.
- Usual application deadline: February.
- The award for National Security Education Program is to study abroad in an area of critical U.S. interest; up to $20,000 for an academic year or $8,000 for a summer (international).
The William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship
- Open to students who have completed at least one year of full-time study.
- Applicants can be studying any field, but with interest in study at the American University in Dubai.
- Deadline: March 15 (Fall), October 15 (Spring), February 15 (Summer)
- The award for the William Jefferson Clinton scholarship is tuition for one term plus on-campus housing at the American University in Dubai.
THE WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON SCHOLARSHIP
Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes
- Open to graduate and undergraduate students.
- Applicants can be studying any field.
- Usual application deadline: November.
- The award for Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes is travel, study, and all program expenses for summer institute language study in countries where “target languages” are spoken.
CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTENSIVE SUMMER INSTITUTES
DAAD German Academic Exchange Service
- Open to undergraduate students (sophomore or juniors) or graduate students (seniors who are prospective graduate students)
- Applicants can be studying any field, but with clear research plan to be conducted in Germany.
- Usual application deadline: January.
- The award for German Academic Exchange Service is 4-10 months of undergraduate study or research in Germany; one year of graduate study in Germany, plus travel costs and health insurance (international).
DAAD GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE SERVICE
DAAD Rise in Germany
- Open to all students interested in conducting research.
- Applicants must be studying in a STEM field,
- The award for DADD Rise in Germany is a Summer internship in Germany.
Gilman International Scholarship Program
- Open to undergraduate students with financial need who will be studying abroad during the academic year.
- Applicants can be studying any field.
- Deadline: Depends on timing of study abroad experience.
- The award for Gilman International Scholarship Program is up to $5,000 for study abroad (must be a minimum of four weeks), with amount contingent on amount of Pell grant eligibility (international).
GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program
- Open to all undergraduate students (sophomores or juniors).
- Applicants must be interested in research careers in math, natural sciences, engineering.
- Usual application deadline: February, with earlier UND deadline.
- The award for Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program is up to $7,500 in expenses (tuition, fees, books, room and board) per year, 1-2 years
BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP AND EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION PROGRAM
Ernest D. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program
- Open to undergraduate sophomores with GPA above 3.0
- Applicants field of study should be disciplines related to NOAA mission in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, or education, e.g., sciences, mathematic, engineering, computer and information sciences, and teacher education.
- Usual application deadline: January.
- The award for Ernest D. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program is up to $8,000 per academic year, plus a paid internship at NOAA (housing provided), travel to program orientation and conference presentations.
ERNEST D. HOLLINGS UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Humanity in Action Fellowship
- Open to undergraduates and new graduates (sophomores to recent graduates).
- The award for Humanity in Action Fellowship is a funded travel experience in one of a number of cities, where students focus on intensive, collaborative study of a human rights issue related to minority groups, the Holocaust, and WWII; requires subsequent completion of an action project.
National Institutes of Health Postbaccalaurate Intramural Research Training
- Open to all undergrads
- Applicants must be studying biomedical research.
NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH POSTBACCALAURATE INTRAMURAL RESEARCH TRAINING
NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate
- Open to all undergraduate students.
- Applicants can be studying any field.
- Usual application deadline: January.
- The award for NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate is up to $9,500 per academic year to support their studies, as well as a paid summer internship opportunities at NOAA facilities across the US.
NOAA ERNEST F. HOLLINGS UNDERGRADUATE
Public Policy and International Affairs Program Fellowship Program
- Open to undergraduate juniors committed to completing an MA/MS in public and/or international affairs at one of the PPIA Consortium graduate schools.
- Applicants can be studying any field.
- Usual application deadline: November.
- The award for Public Policy and International Affairs Program Fellowship Program is at least $5,000 toward MA/MS tuition, stipend, eligibility for internships and other professional development opportunities.
PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS PROGRAM FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Research Experience for Undergrads (REU)
- Open to undergrads, usually with prior research experience.
- Applicants must be studying in science, math, technology; but also some social science and education.
- Usual application deadline: February or March.
- The award for Research Experience for Undergrads is Summer research opportunity with stipend; often includes some travel funding, room and board (varies by institutional host).
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADS (REU)
SMART Scholarship
- Open to undergraduate and graduate students.
- Applicants must be studying sciences, math, engineering, or technology. There is a service requirement in a Department of Defense lab or agency
- Usual application deadline: December.
- The award for SMART Scholarship is $25,000-$41,000 per year depending on prior educational experience, and full tuition
Summer Research Early Identification Program "SREIP"
- Open to undergraduate students.
- Applicants must be studying sciences, math, engineering, or technology.
- Usual application deadline: February.
- The award for Summer Research Early Identification Program is 8-10 weeks at a leadership alliance institution, stipend, travel and housing expenses from the research institution, work under guidance of faculty or research mentor.
SUMMER RESEARCH EARLY IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM "SREIP"
Think Swiss Research Scholarship
- Open to undergrads (sophomore or higher) and graduate students.
- Applications can be studying any field, but with an invitation from a professor at a Swiss university to provide you with a research stay in his/her group. While language skills are not required, knowledge of German, French, or Italian is helpful for daily life.
- Usual application deadline: March.
- The award for Think Swiss Research Scholarship is a two or three month stipend while conducting research in a Swiss institution or a summer school course in Switzerland.
Graduate Students
American Scandinavian Foundation Academic Fellowships and Grants
- Open to all graduate students with language competency normally required.
- Applicants may study in any field, but research must demand presence in Scandinavian country.
- Usual application deadline: November.
- The award for American Scandinavian Foundation Academic Fellowships and Grants is
$20,000 in fellowship, up to $4,000 in grants for study in a Scandinavian country (international).
AMERICAN SCANDINAVIAN FOUNDATION ACADEMIC FELLOWSHIPS AND GRANTS
Carnegie Junior Fellows
- Open to graduate students – apply as a senior who has not begun graduate students.
- Applicants field of study should be in social sciences and other – work in areas such as non-proliferation, democracy, trade, Asian affairs.
- Application deadline: January 15.
- The award Carnegie Junior Fellows is one year of work as a research assistant with a senior Carnegie Fellow, paying $33,000 plus benefit
CARNEGIE JUNIOR FELLOWS
Consortion for Graduate Study in Management
- Open to graduates – apply as a senior; Native American, African American, or Hispanic American, or who can demonstrate a commitment to the consortium’s diversity mission.
- Applicants can be studying any undergraduate discipline, aiming at graduate study in management.
- Usual application deadline: January

DADD Graduate Study/Research
- Open to all graduate students.
- The award for DADD Graduate Study/Research is fellowship for graduate study abroad in Germany

Fulbright U.S. Student Program
- Open to graduates: apply as seniors, recent grads, and grad students (U.S. citizens).
- Applicants can be studying any field, but most plan a project that builds cultural understanding. Language competency normally required
- Usual application deadline: October
- The award for Fulbright U.S. Student Program is covered expenses for a year of travel and living expenses for overseas study/research; some awards offered for English language teaching (international).
FULBRIGHT U.S. STUDENT PROGRAM
Gates Cambridge Scholars Program
- Open to graduates – apply as seniors and prospective graduate students.
- Applicants can be in any field of graduate study offered at Cambridge University.
- Usual application deadline: October
- The award for Gates Cambridge Scholars Program is covered study at Cambridge (international); family stipend available.
GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award
- Open to graduates – apply as seniors or recent grads with Golden Key membership.
- Applicants can be studying any field.
- Usual application deadline: January.
- The award for Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award is $10,000 for graduate study at accredited university anywhere in the world (international or domestic).
GOLDEN KEY GRADUATE SCHOLAR AWARD
Inter-American Foundation Fellowship
- Open to graduates (PhD candidates)
- Applicants may study any field but with “development” as a primary focus of proposed research.
- Usual application deadline: January.
- The award for Inter-American Foundation Fellowship is funds up to a year of on-site dissertation research in Latin America or the Caribbean, including research allowance, stipend, travel, health insurance.
INTER-AMERICAN FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP
