Study Abroad Scholarships

The following list of scholarships focus on study abroad opportunities. Most applications require language skills.

Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunities

Asia Pacific Education

  • Open to all undergraduate students studying abroad in an eligible country.
  • Applicants must be studying any "General Study" (art, international business or international study foreign languages for STA Travel Scholarship.
  • Deadline: April (Fall), August (Spring), December (Summer)
  • The award for Asia Pacific Education varies (e.g., $500 vs. $2000). Supports study in Asia-Pacific countries.

Boren Awards

  • Open to all graduates and undergrads.
  • Applicants can be studying any field.
  • The award for Boren Awards is up to $20,000 for 25-52 weeks abroad.

Congress Bundestag

  • Open to graduates and seniors who will graduate soon.
  • Applicants can be studying any field, however there is a preference for business, technical, and vocational subjects.
  • Usual application deadline: December
  • The award for Congress Bundestag is full year travel, study, and internship in Germany, German language study (no previous experience needed), health insurance, accommodations, etc...

Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes

  • Open to graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Applicants can be studying any field.
  • Usual application deadline: November.
  • The award for Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes is travel, study, and all program expenses for summer institute language study in countries where “target languages” are spoken.

CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTENSIVE SUMMER INSTITUTES

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

  • Open to all graduate students.
  • Usual deadline: Four year cycle, next will be 2022.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

Gilman International Scholarship Program

  • Open to undergraduate students with financial need who will be studying abroad during the academic year.
  • Applicants can be studying any field.
  • Deadline: Depends on timing of study abroad experience. 
  • The award for Gilman International Scholarship Program is up to $5,000 for study abroad (must be a minimum of four weeks), with amount contingent on amount of Pell grant eligibility (international).

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

  • Open to undergrads – sophomores or juniors; Graduates – seniors who are prospective grad students.
  • Applicants can be studying any discipline but with clear research plan to be conducted in Germany.
  • Usual application deadline: January
  • The award for German Academic Exchange Service is 4-10 months of undergraduate study or research in Germany; one year of graduate study in Germany, plus travel costs and health insurance (international)

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The Language Flagship

  • Open to recent graduates who has basic knowledge of a target language.
  • Applicants must have knowledge in one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi/Urdu, Korean, Persian/Farsi, Russian, Central Asian.
  • Usual application deadline: January
  • The award for The Language Flagship is supported expenses for two years of study, one in the U.S. (at a designated flagship language institution) and one overseas, in a target language (international)

The William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship

  • Open to students who have completed at least one year of full-time study.
  • Applicants can be studying any field, but with interest in study at the American University in Dubai.
  • Deadline: March 15 (Fall), October 15 (Spring), February 15 (Summer)
  • The award for the William Jefferson Clinton scholarship is tuition for one term plus on-campus housing at the American University in Dubai.
