About Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry
This is a self-paced course designed as a second semester of introductory chemistry with emphasis on organic and biochemistry. The course includes discussion of the following organic functional groups and biomolecules: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatics, alcohol, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, amides, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids. After successfully completing this course, you should be able to:
- Compare and contrast features of organic functional groups
- Determine reactivity of a compound based on its functional group
- Rank molecules based on increasing or decreasing physical properties (melting and boiling point, intermolecular forces)
- Recognize organic functional groups present in biomolecules
- Describe reactions of organic compounds and biomolecules
- Relate structures of biomolecules to their roles in the body
Students have 3 to 9 months to complete this course from the time of enrollment. You may work at your own pace and complete lessons on your own schedule, submitting up to three items per week for grading. This course contains 17 lessons - including 5 proctored exams - designed to focus your study of Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry and to assist you in achieving the course learning objectives/outcomes. You will work through a combination of required readings, watch instructor videos, complete homework assignments, take quizzes, and complete exams. Lesson topics include:
