ND Respite, Shelter, and Certified Shelter Care
Program Overviews
Learn how North Dakota supports children and families through respite care, shelter care and certified shelter care. These overviews provide caseworkers with a comprehensive understanding of how short-term care can support families, ensure child safety during crises, and connect families with trained licensed and certified providers. These overviews offer a practical, policy-aligned roadmap for child welfare professionals to protect children, support families, and navigate these services with confidence.
Respite/Shelter Care Program Overview
The following training, offered by Children and Family Services, provides an overview of respite and shelter care services in North Dakota. It explains the purpose of these programs, which offer temporary support for children and families in need. Respite care gives families short-term relief by providing trained caregivers to look after children in a safe, supportive environment. Shelter care provides immediate, temporary placement for children who cannot safely remain in their homes due to safety concerns or crisis situations. The video also covers eligibility, how services are accessed, and the role of caseworkers and caregivers in ensuring the well-being and safety of children during their stay.
