Accommodations in Higher Education
Accommodations are determined each semester on a class-by-class basis, and students must meet with Student Disability Resources each semester to review and renew them.
After completing the application and initial meeting, students who are approved for disability accommodations for that semester will receive a Notification of Disability Accommodation Letter.
Accommodations are not the same for every student with the same diagnosis. Instead, they are based on how a disability affects you in your classes, the structure of each class, and the specific barriers you may encounter. This process is individualized and developed through conversation between the student and the Access Coordinator.
Accommodations Not Provided in Higher Education
Student Disability Resources provides accommodations to remove barriers and ensure access. However, some supports that may have been available in K–12 are not considered accommodations at the college level. Colleges are not required to provide:
- Individualized or modified instruction
- Personal tutoring or academic coaching
- Personal care attendants supplied by the institution
- Transportation to and from campus or clinical sites
These types of services fall outside the scope of disability accommodations. Our role is to partner with students to provide access in the classroom and campus environment, while students remain responsible for their own learning, personal care, and transportation. There are many offices on campus that provide additional support.
