While Abroad
You're on-site but you may still have questions.
Review this information below and contact your Study Abroad Advisor if you can't find the answers you're searching for.
Course Information
There are numerous reasons you may need to change courses after you arrive on site, such as:
- Time conflicts with another class.
- The course is canceled.
- Late registration means the class is now full.
- It wasn't what you thought it would be.
If you switch a course from your original plan you will need to submit an updated Petition for Off-campus Credit. Be sure to email your Academic Advisor to let them know of your updates and send the syllabus for your new course along with a new Petition.
Refer to the same steps listed on the Academic Planning page.
If you are abroad during a Fall or Spring term you will need to register for your next semester courses at UND while you are away. It is important that you connect with your Academic Advisor ahead of registration to discuss your course options, if you don't already have that scheduled.
Be aware of time zone differences if you plan to register as soon as your registration date becomes available.
Your study abroad (SAD) hold will not prevent you from registering for UND classes while you are abroad. See below for additional information.
UND Study Abroad places a hold on your account called the SAD hold. The purpose of the hold is to prevent students from dropping out of their UNIV 229 study abroad placeholder course while abroad. If this course is dropped while abroad students will fall out of status and there may be financial aid consequences. A description of the hold is available on Campus Connection.
The SAD hold will not prevent you from registering for UND classes while you are abroad.
Please reach out to your Study Abroad Advisor if you need to drop a course during registration as the SAD hold will prevent you from dropping any course.
If you have any other holds on your student account, such as the Financial Obligation Agreement (FOA) hold that is placed every term, you will not be able register for the following term. You are responsible for clearing holds on your account, even when you are abroad. Reach out to the appropriate advisors to resolve holds.
Resources
Don't forget about your Blackboard Community page. All UND study abroad students are added to a Blackboard page that includes all the information from Pre-Departure Orientation, links to helpful websites, and connection to other students studying abroad during the same term as you.
Suddenly finding yourself in an entirely new culture and climate is stressful and can open you up to a risk of illness or aggravation of a latent condition. Even something as simple as a common cold can take on whole new proportions when you are in a foreign country. Remember we have information on how to stay health and safe while abroad on our website!
You can still vote while you're abroad! Review the absentee voting information from the US Department of State and US Vote Foundation. Remember: to vote from abroad, you must register with local election officials in your state of voting residence AND request an absentee ballot.
Staying Connected
UND Email
Email is the official form of communication from the UND Study Abroad Office. UND Study Abroad expects you to be checking your UND email account regularly and will send check-in emails throughout your experience.
You may also receive an email address from your host program. Be sure you are logging in to review correspondence from both your host program email as well as your UND email.
Friends & Family
We recommend that you set up a communication plan with your friends and family prior to your departure, but now that you're abroad you'll want to reassess if that communication plan was realistic, especially with different time zones and new schedules.
Popular free apps to use when communicating with friends and family at home (as well as new friends from abroad!) are:
Meetup is a resource for students abroad, as it provides a platform to easily discover and join local groups and events in their host country. This helps students immerse themselves in the local culture, make new friends, and create memorable experiences during their time abroad.
