Cost & Aid
The real cost of studying abroad includes more than tuition and fees.
Take steps to develop a budget for your study abroad program and explore scholarship opportunities.
Study Abroad Expenses
We can help you develop a budget for direct enroll or exchange programs. For programs through an affiliate provider, visit their website for program costs. Costs you will incur include:
- UND application fee ($50)
- UND study abroad fee ($300)
- Tuition (paid to UND or directly to program*)
- Passport
- Visa/residence permit (if applicable)
- Meals
- Housing
- Books and supplies
- Travel expenses (including airfare and in-country transportation)
- Personal expenses (such as phone plan and toiletries)
- Affiliate provider application fee (if applicable)
*Calculate UND tuition costs for exchange programs by using the cost estimator.
UND Study Abroad provides a budget form for all students to use when researching program destinations. Sample budgets for direct-enroll and exchange programs can be downloaded from their program pages.
Budgeting Expenses
Although the budget form will give you a good estimate of the overall cost of your program, some factors — such as host university tuition — are dependent on the exchange rate and are subject to change.
It is also important that you do individual research. Everyone’s spending habits are different, and it is impossible to define a general amount that will be accurate for each student.
Talk to students who have studied at your intended destination — they are truly your best resource, having lived through what you are about to experience. Reach out to your study abroad advisor if you would like to connect with a UND study abroad alumnus.

Study Abroad Scholarships
Most scholarship deadlines are similar to program deadlines but it is in your best interest to start planning your scholarship application early. Please note that some of these programs allow you to apply on your own, but many of them require you to apply through and be officially endorsed or nominated by your university.
This process takes time, so plan ahead and connect with your resources, including UND's National Scholarships & Fellowships and the UND Writing Center.

Most financial aid and scholarship money can be applied to study abroad, including scholarships that aren't originally intended for study abroad, such as tuition waivers, merit scholarships, and cultural diversity scholarships. Some scholarship conditions will require that you participate in a UND exchange program.
For non-study abroad specific scholarships, you will need to connect directly with UND Financial Aid and/or the scholarship provider to ensure the award can be applied toward your study abroad experience.
