Academic advisors assist students in taking responsibility for developing meaningful educational plans which are compatible with students’ career and life goals. 

Primary Advisor Assigned to students based on their primary major.
Support Advisor Assigned to students based on their secondary major (if applicable).  

The head of a college. Their positions are either entirely or mostly administrative.

Administrator in charge of overseeing student life, student services, and the overall delivery of education to students.

The faculty member assigned to manage a department. They often have teaching assignments in addition to their administrative work.

A faculty member assigned to students for support related to the specific content of a student’s major and career goals. Not every department assigns faculty mentors, and students are welcome to visit with faculty members not assigned as their faculty mentor as well.

Term Definition
Faculty Academic personnel, generally with teaching responsibilities.
Staff Support personnel for the university, generally without teaching responsibilities

A student who is the first in their immediate family (grandparents, parents, siblings) to graduate with a four-year degree.

A graduate student who teaches or aids in teaching activities and/or grading of a class. GTAs are students pursuing a graduate degree in the area of study related to a class they are teaching or with which they are assisting.

A general term for one assigned to teach a class.

The chief officer of the university responsible for oversight of all operations - academic and administrative.

A faculty member who is in a tenure-track position. These faculty members generally have completed a doctorate or the terminal degree for their area, and they often have contract duties in addition to classroom instruction.

The chief academic officer of the university. Their office implements the academic priorities and allocates resources to support the university's goals.

The chief officer in charge of academic records.

An undergraduate or graduate student working in collaboration with a faculty member on research.

A support person in a specific UND office (usually ROTC or Veteran & Military Services) assigned to a student.

An undergraduate student who aids in teaching activities and/or grading of a class. Undergraduate TA's are students of junior or senior status who have previously taken and earned a grade of 'A' in the class.

Administrator in charge of the general welfare and vitality of UND. Their office advocates for students and seeks to create a positive environment. They are responsible for policy, long-range planning, budget, personnel and coordination of the departments comprising the Division of Student Affairs.
