Want to make your PDFs accessible to all users? Join this introductory workshop to learn how to use Adobe Acrobat’s accessibility tools to evaluate and improve the accessibility of your documents. Gain hands-on experience with configuring Acrobat’s interface for accessibility, using the Accessibility Checker to identify common issues, and addressing the “Big Three” problem areas in PDF remediation—tags, reading order, and metadata. You’ll also explore Acrobat’s auto-tagging feature, understand its limitations, and discover why manual remediation is often necessary. Leave with practical next steps and curated resources to continue developing your PDF accessibility skills.

Claiming Your Adobe Acrobat Account
All current UND faculty and staff members have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro as part of the university’s Adobe licensing agreement. Acrobat Pro allows users to view, create, edit, sign, manage, and remediate PDF documents. Prior to this workshop, you will need to claim and install an Adobe Acrobat Pro license. UIT’s Knowledge Base article on Adobe Acrobat Pro provides links and instructions on how to do so.

Making Simple Images Accessible
This introductory workshop offers an overview of alternative text (alt-text) and its role in making images accessible to screen readers and assistive technology. Participants will learn the definition of alt-text and be introduced to best practices for creating effective alt-text, focusing on techniques for crafting clear, concise, and accurate descriptions. This session also includes a demonstration on adding alt-text to images in Blackboard Ultra and Microsoft Office.
Making Complex Images Accessible
This workshop focuses on best practices for creating alt-text for complex images, such as charts, graphs, infographics, cartoons, etc. Participants will learn techniques for crafting detailed descriptions and see demonstrations in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint on how to integrate these long descriptions into their documents.
Prerequisite: Must have attended the Making Images Usable/Accessible workshop.
