Financial Aid Eligibility

Find out if you qualify for financial aid at UND.

The only way to know if you're eligible to receive financial aid — and the amount you may receive — is by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Credits Required to Receive Financial Aid

To receive financial aid, you must be a fully admitted, degree-seeking student enrolled at least half-time:

• 12 + credits = full time 
• 9 – 11 credits = ¾ time 
• 6 – 8 credits = half time
• 1 – 5 credits = less than half time

Most UND courses are 3 credits. 

Financial Aid for Part-Time Students

• Undergraduates: May qualify for limited financial aid if enrolled in at least 6 credits.
• Graduate/Law Students: May qualify for limited financial aid if enrolled in at least 5 credits.
• Students enrolled in less than 5 credits may still be eligible for:
  • Federal Pell Grant.
  • North Dakota State Grant.
  • Some types of UND scholarships and private loans.

Financial Aid for Online and Distance Students

Most online and distance education courses that follow the semester schedule are eligible for financial aid. However, self-paced open enrollment courses do not qualify. Refer to Online & Distance Students for financial aid details. 

Courses Not Eligible for Financial Aid

The following types of courses are not eligible for state and federal financial aid:

• Courses that do not count toward UND's graduation requirements.
• Audited classes.
• Continuing Enrollment courses.
• Certain certificate programs
• Open-enrollment courses taken online or by mail.
• Self-Paced Enroll Anytime (SPEA) courses.

Standards to Maintain Financial Aid Eligibility

To continue receiving financial aid, students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards, which ensure they are making progress toward their degree.

Students not meeting SAP standards may risk losing some or all of their financial aid.
