Returning Students Room Sign Up

Starting January 21, students who currently live in on-campus housing and want to return to live on campus next year have the first opportunity to apply.

You have many living options as a returning, transfer, or graduate student. If you're looking to return to live on campus in Residence Halls: Swanson Hall or University Place, follow the process and steps listed below and selection times will be sent on a first come first served order. All residents will be assigned a roommate if they do not select one in their Housing Self Service prior to their room assignment. First-year students, required to live on campus, receive priority in all other Residence Halls unless space becomes available.

If you'd like to live in the On-Campus Apartments, you can submit an application at any time, but applications follow a first come first served order.

Housing Self Service - Apply

Returning To Live On Campus Process

If you are a returning student who would like to live in Residence Halls: University Place or Swanson Hall, follow the process and timelines listed below. Dates are subject to change (updated January 10, 2025).

Step 1. Apply on Housing Self Service

Submit a Returning Student Room Sign Up Agreement in Housing Self Service beginning January 21 at 10 a.m. CST.

Step 2. Select a Roommate

  • Only students who have completed an application for the upcoming academic year may be selected as a roommate.
  • Roommate selections must be made prior to room assignments.
  • Only "fully matched" roommate groups can be assigned to a room/suite together. Only one roommate needs to select a room. We take the average of the all roommates date/time of application and only one of those students needs to select a room as long as you are verified as roommates in your Housing Self Service roommate profile.
  • Room assignment priority number for "fully matched" roommate groups is determined by an average of each individual's priority number. Example — Four individuals have the following priority numbers: Student A - 10, Student B - 20, Student C - 30, Student D - 40; once "fully-matched," their individual priority numbers will become the group average: Student A - 25, Student B - 25, Student C - 25, Student D - 25.

  1. Log in to Housing Self Service.
  2. From the Room and Roommate Selection Menu select "Roommates."
  3. Select the term you wish to select a roommate for and click Submit.
  4. Under Roommate Search enter the full name or email address to search for the person you want to be in a roommate group with. If the person you are looking for is not found:
    1. Verify that person has completed the Residence Hall Application or Returning Student Room Sign Up Agreement (Fall 2025).
    2. Make sure you have typed their name or UND email address correctly. Use student's full first name (ex: Christopher instead of Chris).
    3. Try to search for last name only.

Once you select your roommate, an email will be sent asking them to accept the request. Roommate requests can be verified in Housing Self Service.

  1. Log in to Housing Self Service.
  2. From the Room and Roommate Selection Menu select "Roommates."
  3. Select the term you wish to select a roommate for and click Submit.
  4. Under Roommate Search, select the attributes you are looking for in a roommate.
    1. Update your Roommate Profile: Select Personal Information from the menu and then select Roommate Profile. You can choose whether you want your profile to be public or private. Please provide a personal introduction and contact information to assist in the roommate matching process. This is what other students will see when searching for roommates.
    2. Update your My Info: Answer as many of the questions you would like. Your answers to these questions will help you search for students who have also answered these questions during the roommate selection process. These questions will also be used during the assignment process to match students who have not selected roommates.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and select “Begin Search”.
  6. You will be directed to a list of possible matches. If no matches come up, reduce the number of attributes and try the search again. Continue until you receive results.
  7. Read through results. Individual profiles are only complete if a student chooses to complete them.
  8. Connect with any students you are interested in through the contact information they have provided.
  9. If you agree to match, return to Housing Self Service and complete steps under “If you already know who you want to room with.”

LGBTQ+ Roommate Matching

Step 3. Select Your Room

Apply ASAP! The sooner you apply, the better room selection time you'll be assigned. You must select a room at your scheduled selection time or you may be assigned a room or added to our waitlist until space becomes available. If the building you want to live in does not have space, do not select a room. Email housing@UND.edu and our team will be able to assist you with options as space becomes available.

Students who would like a room for the next academic year will participate in Open Room Selection.

  • This process uses a system where students are given a priority number based on the date the Room Sign Up Agreement was submitted. All applications are first come first served.
  • Students with higher priority can select a room earlier, meaning they will have more rooms to choose from.
  • You will receive a start date and time based on the priority number. More information about using an average for roommate selection times is under Step 2: Select a Roommate above.
  • All Room Selection start times will be emailed to the student's UND email and will also be available in Housing Self Service.
  • Each student will be given 4 minutes to select from all available rooms before the next student can start selecting a room. Once a student’s start time has passed, the student may select a room at any time before the end of Open Room Selection.
  • Students can only select one room assignment during Room Selection. Room changes may be offered based on availability.
  • Please visit Housing Self Service well in advance of your start time so you may troubleshoot any access problems.
Friday, February 21

Room assignments will be given to students who did not self-select a room or will be added to our waitlist when/if space becomes available.

Applications after February 21

Returning students who wish to live on campus after February 21 may still sign up to live on campus and will be moved to a waitlist and contacted when/if space becomes available.

Room Changes

Please contact the Housing Office at housing@UND.edu for room change availability. Room changes will be first come first served.
