A HIMS AME, or Human Intervention Motivation Study Aviation Medical Examiner, is a physician who evaluates pilots for substance – or alcohol-related conditions, or other mental health conditions.

The FAA may require HIMS AME monitoring for pilots suspected of having a substance issue.

The HIMS Program (Human Intervention Motivation Study) is a specialized program in the aviation industry designed to assist pilots who are dealing with substance abuse or dependency issues as well as mental health challenges.

The goal is to coordinate the care of the pilot regarding identifying, treatment, and ultimately, returning to flying.
