Measles
Last updated Feb. 26, 2026
With the recent identification of measles in our region, we are sharing precautionary information to help keep UND healthy and safe. Currently, there are no confirmed cases at UND nor in Grand Forks County. However, public health agencies have identified measles cases in North Dakota.
MMR Immunization Status
Individuals who already have the recommended two doses of the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine have a 97% effective immunity against infection.
Knowing your MMR immunization status can greatly assist any necessary campus response:
- Verify that your immunization records are current, with 2 documented MMR doses.
- Visit the North Dakota Immunization Information System (or your state immunization registry) or your electronic health portal (e.g. MyChart) to view your immunization history.
- Immunization Information Systems for most U.S. states also are on the Centers for Disease Control website.
- Students can check their status through the UND Student Health Patient Portal.
- Consult your healthcare provider for guidance if your records are incomplete or you’re unsure of your status.
- Individuals born before 1957 are considered immune as nearly everyone from this period was infected during childhood.
Signs, Symptoms and Support
- Measles starts with a fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes followed by a red rash that usually begins on the head or face and spreads to the rest of the body.
- If you experience symptoms, call ahead to your healthcare provider, including Student Health Services, before seeking care to reduce potential additional exposures.
- Unvaccinated individuals should quarantine immediately and monitor for symptoms for 21 days following last exposure.
- Vaccinated individuals with 2 documented doses of MMR are protected but should monitor for symptoms for 21 days following last exposure. If symptoms develop, stay home and consult your physician.
- Vaccinated individuals with 1 documented dose of MMR should get a 2nd dose within 3 days of exposure (and at least 28 days after first dose) and monitor for symptoms for 21 days following last exposure. If symptoms develop, stay home and consult your physician.
- With very limited housing at UND, any infected or unvaccinated exposed individuals are advised to immediately quarantine off campus.
- Students should communicate with family or other trusted contacts to develop an off-campus quarantine plan.
- Students: Before alerting faculty members to your absence or requesting a courtesy notification through Community Standards & Care Network, be sure to carefully review the Student Absence Notification webpage and follow the guidance provided in your course syllabi.
- UND employees should work with their supervisors to manage long-term quarantine/isolations needs.
