Update Your Name and Information
It's important for you to keep UND up-to-date with your current address and contact information. Your name listed in Campus Connection is the way your name will appear on your diploma, and your listed home address will be used for almost all mailed correspondence.
You do not need to complete a legal name change to update your name or NDUS.identifier

Update Name in Campus Connection
- Log in to Campus Connection
- Click Profile in the main menu
- Under Personal Details, click on Your Name then, Type listed as Preferred Name
- Update First Name and save
- Additional Changes
- Legal name changes must be done with the Name Change form through the Office of the Registrar.
- Addresses (Home, Permanent, or Parent) can be updated under on Campus Connection Profile under Addresses
- Emergency Contacts can be updated on Campus Connection Profile under Emergency Contacts
Updating your Preferred Name in Campus Connection will update the following:
- Blackboard
- Class roster
- Advisement report
- Diploma
- Email display name (update NDUS Identifier with UIT to change email))
Chosen Name and Legal Name Change
Update NDUS Identifier
After updating your name in Campus Connection (and you have verified correct information) you can update your NDUS.identifier/Username. Submit a "Username Change Form" through University Information Technology.
- Log-in to the UIT Help center
- Click on Services and then Accounts and Security
- Scroll down on the menu and select Request first.last Username Change
- Select Request Username Change and complete form.
You can also use the UIT virtual Chat or visit a technician at the service desk located in the Chester Fritz Library during business hours for assistance.
On Campus Employment
Not all campus systems pull your name from Campus Connection. An example of this is within on-campus employment. Some departments use multiple systems and your legal name may be used. Be sure to work with your on-campus supervisor to verify that your name is used correctly in their systems, many have the ability to manually update your name. UND Dining Services is one area for example where you can contact department staff to update your name in their access control system.

U Card
You can update your your name on your U Card. Update your name in Campus Connection first and then complete the U Card order form.
Legal Name Change
If you have completed a legal name change, you must complete a Name Change Request with the Office of the Registrar.

Update Gender, Pronouns, & Sexual Orientation Information
You can update your gender, pronouns and sexual orientation information in Campus Connection. These are opt-in options and are not required by the University.
- Log in to Campus Connection
- Click Profile in the main menu
- Under Personal Details, click on the Biographic tab
- Select your gender identity, pronouns, and sexual orientation from a drop-down menu.
Gender identity is not shared with class instructors or other campus partners, including health services. Authorized campus employees with access to your bio-demographic information will also have access to view your gender identity. This may include academic advisors as gender identity shows up in Hawk Central.
When you confirmed your enrollment to the campus, some of your personal information, like your name, ID number and demographic information, was made available to campus employees who work with you, including staff, faculty and some student employees. If you decide to share your personal pronouns, your pronouns will be included along with other information provided to campus employees. Examples of where your personal pronouns will be available include the class roster provided to instructors and staff including your photo and the student record in campus systems that advisors and other student services staff use to work with you
Sexual orientation is not shared with class instructors or other campus partners, including health services. Authorized campus employees with access to your bio-demographic information will also have access to your sexual orientation.
Hawk Central
Hawk Central is used to support your academic progress and connect you with resources at UND. Your name and gender identity is pulled from Campus Connection into Hawk Central. Below are ways in which your information is displayed.
Name
Currently, Hawk Central populates your name as you have it indicated in Campus Connection. Legal name and preferred name in Hawk Central pull directly from preferred name in Campus Connection. This is a little misleading as the legal name field is populated with your preferred name, not necessarily your legal name.
Pronouns
If you updated your pronouns in Campus Connection, your pronouns will be displayed in Hawk Central in the custom data section under general information.
Gender Inclusive Housing
UND is committed to working with you in you in finding an on-campus housing option that meets your needs and where you can feel comfortable. Students are able to indicate if they would be willing to accept a room assignment for a gender inclusive room/suite as part of the application process. The Closet
The Closet was created to provide access to free identify affirming clothing for UND students. The closet helps support trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse students feel comfortable and validated so they can be their authentic selves while pushing forward in their education.
Health Resources
- UND Student Health Services specializes in medical and psychiatric care for students, including transgender individuals
in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment. Inclusive health initiatives include:
- Ongoing training for staff on transgender health concerns
- Paperwork/Intake form modification to include pronouns, and chosen name.
- Referral for gender confirmation treatments/procedures
- Northern Praire Community Clinicin Columbia Hall offers voice therapy for transgender students.
- University Counseling Center provides mental health and substance use services that support students in their academic and personal goals. Services include modified paperwork/intake forms that are gender inclusive. Staff also participate in ongoing LGBTQIA training.
- LGBTQ+ Directory - Harbor Health Initiative provides a directory for LGBTQ+ inclusive healthcare practitioners and providers.

Updating Documents Outside of UND
IDs and Documentation
There are different processes for changing official documents, depending on the type of documentation you are change. This varies by state, the state in which you were born, and more. The ID Documents Center from the National Center for Transgender Equality offers guidance across various states as well as information on changing federal documents such as passports.
