Best Practices for Headshots
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Book early and confirm the details.
- Schedule your headshot appointment at least 1-2 weeks before you need it.
- Double-check the date, time, and location of your appointment. If you’re unsure, reach out to the Experiential Learning Center.
2. Prepare for Your Appointment
What to Wear
- Consider wearing business casual or business attire, depending on the intended purpose of the headshot (LinkedIn, student organization profile, etc.).
- Choose solid colors or subtle patterns that look professional and avoid distracting designs or logos. Nothing too bright or too dark.
- Consider a blazer, collared shirt, or a simple blouse for a polished look.
- Understand how the headshot will be used (LinkedIn, professional profiles, academic websites, etc.). This helps guide your clothing, posture, and expression.
- If the appointment requires additional accessories (such as a blazer, tie, or specific accessory), make sure to bring them with you.
- Make an appointment for the Career Closet if you need help with any personal styling needs.
Personal Appearance
- Style your hair neatly. If necessary, get a haircut or trim before the appointment.
- Keep makeup natural and minimal to maintain a professional appearance.
- Avoid heavy accessories or anything that may distract from your face.
3. What to Expect During the Appointment
Session Time
- Arrive at least 5-10 minutes early to ensure you have time to settle in and prepare. If you’re rushed, it can show in your photos.
- Most headshot sessions are quick – usually around 5-10 minutes, depending on the number of shots taken. Don’t worry if you’re not used to being in front of a camera; we will guide you!
Stay Relaxed
- Take deep breaths and try to stay relaxed in front of the camera. A natural expression will make your headshot look more authentic.
4. Additional Items
Consistency Across Platforms
- Use the same headshot for LinkedIn, and other professional or academic platforms for consistency in your personal brand.
Check for Updates
- If you have a new look or have recently made significant changes (like a new hairstyle), make sure to schedule your appointment soon after or schedule a follow-up appointment.
Receiving Your Headshot
- Your headshot will be sent to you via email 2-3 business days after your appointment.
